I don't understand why this isn't burning up the message board. The chickenhawks have been working overtime to portray the military as being overwhelming supporters of bush*s policies regarding Iraq. These poll numbers, as we suspected they would if anyone would do the poll, throw many of the rethuglican talking points back in their face.

Why aren't we all over this????

End Iraq War Soon, Most Troops Say In Poll

Large Majority In Survey Think Saddam Hussein Played Role In Sept. 11, 2001 Attacks

POSTED: 8:23 am PST February 28, 2006

WASHINGTON -- A Le Moyne College/Zogby Poll released Tuesday said that 72 percent of American troops serving in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year.

The degree of support for the mission was different according to various branches of the military, Zogby found. Eighty-nine percent of military reserves, 82 percent of those in the National Guard and 58 percent of U.S. Marines say troops should leave Iraq within a year, for example.

Seven in ten of those in the regular Army thought the U.S. should leave Iraq in the next year. About three-quarters of those in National Guard and Reserve units favor withdrawal within six months, while 15 percent of Marines felt that way. About half of those in the regular Army favored withdrawal from Iraq in the next six months.

snip...
Eighy-five percent said the U.S. mission is "to retaliate for Saddam’s role in the 9-11 attacks," 77 percent said they also believe the main or a major reason for the war was "to stop Saddam from protecting al Qaeda in Iraq."

"Ninety-three percent said that removing weapons of mass destruction is not a reason for U.S. troops being there," John Zogby, president and CEO of Zogby International, sad in a statement. "Instead, that initial rationale went by the wayside and, in the minds of 68 percent of the troops, the real mission became to remove Saddam Hussein."

3. I've always said the Big Lies are the best ones . . .
Our lied-to and fucked-over troops are clinging to the shreds of justification for seeing their buddies turned into IED-frappe on a daily basis.

It's interesting. When I was there (May-November 2003), the troops were much more realistic: the consensus was that Bush had decided that Saddam had to go -- period -- and they were going to do the CIC's bidding. I never heard any of them talk about the 9/11 fantasy.

7. I had read that disturbing detail earlier re 911
But I don't understand how that takes away from the fact that they think that we should leave Iraq? If anything, the misinformation about 911 would only make one question what they are being told, and what the military would think if they knew the truth.

2. Who cares what they think. Bush runs the show, and that's it.
Next question, please.

4. It may be that most of the troops finally understand...
their actual Mission?

5. I care what those soldiers think, I support those guys
I don't support the war, but I do support these soldiers in their efforts, what they are having to do is the worst of the worst and what they lay on the line is their life. I should know, I have a son who is a soldier who is in Tikrit... I damn well care what these boys think and feel....

8. It's obvious Bush and Rumsfeld don't give a damn. That's the sad part.

Every one of them should be brought home safely, and the sooner the better, regardless of what Bush and his stooges think.
