Dominos founder building town; condoms, bc pills, abortion will b banned
Yes, Florida again.

NAPLES -- If Domino's Pizza founder Thomas S. Monaghan has his way, a new town being built in a quiet corner of southwest Florida will be governed by strict Catholic principles, particularly when it comes to sex.

The pizza magnate, raised by nuns in orphanages, is bankrolling the town called Ave Maria with millions of dollars, calling its construction ``God's will.'' Stores won't sell pornographic magazines, pharmacies won't carry condoms or birth control pills, and cable television will carry no X-rated channels, he said in a speech last year to the first annual Boston Catholic Men's Conference.

Civil libertarians say the plan is unconstitutional and promise lawsuits.

The town is being constructed around Ave Maria University, the first Catholic university to be built in the United States in four decades, which Monaghan also founded. Both are set to open next year about 25 miles east of Naples.

2. better yet...
... make it an island. float it away. take all the religious nutters with them...

i can't believe i worked for Domino's as a teen. damn shame I didn't use any of the paychecks to have an abortion, although I DID take Monahans money to buy up tons of birth control pills so I wouldn't get knocked up from the premarital sex i had while dreaming of the virgin mary.

oh wait am i going to hell for that?

15. Well, 25 miles east of Naples --
that's pretty much the start of the Everglades (or at least what's left of the Everglades). Close to an island.

And yes, you're going to hell. But I'm bringing a cooler with ice, so look for me.

18. You can make up for it by joining
our club, Evil Abortion of the Month.

We take turns getting knocked up so that we can make up new and fun reasons to have abortions.

There's all kinds of reasons to chose from, wanting to use the stem cells from your fetus to cure a relative's disease, anger because the fetus is the wrong sex, getting even with your boyfriend and/or husband, clothes don't fit anymore and the maternity ones suck, hey, make up one of your own, you get bonus points for that!

The really good members wait until they're in their third trimester, just so they can get one of those rare, but oh-so-thrilling "partial birth abortions".

Read all about us wicked women at Fundies Say the Darndest Things!

This will be nothing more than a closed community where everyone will have to follow the will of their "beloved leader".

I find it very telling that you never hear about "left wing" compounds, only these religious nutjobs.

I do feel somewhat vindicated, though, seeing that both of these cults are decades old and in the case of Jim Jones, defunct. Unfortunately, we will have to deal with the likes of monaghan, moon, and the aryan nation for many years to come.

52. True, true - maybe they are the exceptions that prove the rule
but I think there's danger on either extreme of the political spectrum - people at those extremes tend to be "true believer" types that are less swayed by evidence that doesn't fit their preconceived notions. Ths, more likely to be subject to the brainwashing of a charismatic cultist.

20. how nice, an entire town built around the idea of controlling
what its residents do with their genitals. Meaning the people who live there will spend approximately 98% of their waking hours focusing their attention on what is or isn't going on in their hoo-haws, not to mention speculating on what the neighbors are up to with theirs. Such lofty aspirations.

I wonder if there is a scientific way to measure the hypocrisy in parts per square inch of such a community. The levels are sure to be stratospheric, as usual when humans piously announce their intention to control and eliminate normal human behavior and desires. The seamy underbelly of this town will eventually make Buffalo Bill's basement lair in Silence of the Lambs look like Pleasantville.

24. Sounds like a fun town.
The community, developed through a partnership with the Barron Collier Company, an agricultural and real estate firm, will be set on 5,000 acres with a European-inspired town center. It will encircle a massive church and what planners call the largest crucifix in the nation, standing nearly 65 feet tall.

It sounds like a really big version of a gated community, but extending all those intrusive home-owners' association rules to businesses as well as residences. I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to do whatever they want (subject to state and federal laws), just don't expect me to live there...
