Young Janine Kelker drove her friend home from watching the UNC-Boston College men's basketball game (probably on a television at a bar; the ACC Championships were in Greensboro and Ms. Kelker was in Charlotte). She had consumed no alcohol. After dropping her friend off, she was trying to get home...when a drunk driver hit and killed her.

2. Death penalty, or at least life in prison, or at least permanent loss

of license for all drunk drivers.

It should, at mimimum, be permanent and absolute loss of license, never drive again, never be able to own a car again for a drunk driving offense.

Personally, I also want jail time - I think every drunk drive should be charged, minimum, with attempted homocide when they are stopped by police; and with inentional murder if they do kill someone.

I'm sick of all this bullshit coddling of these criminal, negligent, homocidal piece of shit.

Killing someone while drunk is not a goddamn accident - it's A CHOICE.

And they should be hung up to dry and rot in hell for all I care for doing it.

4. I agree, but it will never happen.

Too many people can more easily relate to the person who has a few drinks, gets behind the wheel, gets caught and loses his license than they can to a person who loses life or limb to a drunk driver.

We don't want to admit we could possibly be the latter, while just about everyone can imagine being the former. Thus society shows more sympathy to the drunk driver...because it can more easily imagine being in his place. And when it comes to being his victim, goes into deep denial.

Sad. But really, in most of this country, we treat people who can't drive like non-persons. And as long as we do that, our society will be loath to give drunk drivers what they deserve...loss of driving privileges...because somehow, it is thought of as almost the equivalent of sentencing them to life in prison, or to death.

We have to stand up and say we are going to stop sympathizing with drunk drivers more than with their victims, or nothing will change.

5. everything has changed

it has gone too far, people who have never harmed anyone are getting draconian sentences

a man in my parish got 20 years for a DWI fourth offense, even tho he had never harmed anyone, he was pulled over for weaving, but had not had or caused any accidents

it's the "good luck" school of morality, you've driven drunk or your friend has driven drunk or your mom has driven drunk, but they weren't caught, so they are a better person and more moral than the man who did get caught

i say punish people for what they do, not for what they "might" do

an accident/negligent homicide should not be treated the same as jeff dahmer for cripes sake

maybe you have no friends or family you care about but the trouble is, most people do, and with 0.08 on the books 3 beers is supposedly a drunk driver even tho i doubt such a level of alcohol has any impact on many people's driving skills whatsoever

i'm tired of the witchcraft mentality of this society, the belief there is no such thing as an accident, every bad thing was caused by them witches and most be punished by death by stoning


if you don't want people to drive drunk, do something to promote public transportation

I disagree with you entirely.

When I go out to eat, and I'm driving, I might have a cocktail or beer before dinner if I know I will be there a long time. And that's it.

NO ONE needs to have multiple drinks when they're out; NO ONE needs to get drunk when they're out.

Driving drunk IS A CHOICE. And it's a choice that leads to the death lottery - "Will I kill someone tonight? Or will I make it home okay? Let's see!"

Fuck that. Anyone that goddamn unsocial and stupid deserves to lose their license.

The guy you mentioned getting twenty years for his 4th DWI - good for him. The asshole had a choice not to do it, and got caught, and probably fined. And then caught again. Then caught again. Then caught again, and now he's doing the time.
