Jeremy Saat

What do members of DU think about Jeremy Saat? If you have not heard about Jeremy Saat he is another football player who has decided to give up his football career in order to go the military. Saat was the college roommate of Pat Tillman when they went to college. Saat has said that he was inspired to join the Marines when Tillman was killed in Afghanistan. Do members of DU think Saat is just Bush's do over attempt? Things did not work out with Tillman; he was not the Bush loving Army person he was supposed to be. Also, Tillman did not want to talk about his decision to join the military and Tillman would not allow the military to use him in military advertisiments or on posters. However, with Saat it is possible that Bush has a second chance. Saat is already doing inteviews and maybe he will decide to become part of the military advertisement campaign(s).

At this point I would like to point out that I am a big supporter of the military. I think being in the military is a great thing. In addition, I plan to join the military at some point. I tend to think I will get flamed for my next comments and I do not dislike either Tillman or Saat, but this is my opinion. I am not a fan of making a big deal about guy like Tillman and Saat joining the military. I know that some people would argue that these guys should get more attention in that they have up some form of millions of dollars to join the military. However, from my point of view these guys did not make great about amounts of money in terms of being a football player. To me their joining the military in not that big of a deal in that it is not like these guys were Peyton Mannings or other guys making tens of millions of dollars. Also, it seems like before they joined the military very few people had heard of these guys. Finally, I tend to think that the media sometimes acts like Tillman and Saat are the only people making a scarifice. In my opinion all of the soldiers are making great scarifices. Each of these soldiers has someone or something in their lives that is worth a million dollars to them. I respect both Tillman and Saat for their decision to join the military even if each would have been a Republican. I just tend to think they get too much attention for joining the military.

1. Before you join check out this thread on the suspicious death of

Tillman. His family is outraged that his body was not released by the military, his journal and his armor and uniform were burned. Tillman is quoted as saying to his comrades that what they were doing was illegal as hell and his journal probably reflected that. His death as seen by his fellow soldiers was a sniper hit not friendly fire. There are a lot of unanswered questions and his very angry fathers says he thinks there will never be answers because of the cover-up. It sounds like they did not want an anti-Iraq war activist coming back to the states.

2. Did Tillman and this Saat guy make a big deal out of it or did the media?

I know McCain was thrilled Tillman joined and said something like "He'll be a great recruiting poster"

That was my point that the media made to much about these guys joining. I respect that they did it, but I think the media make too much out of it.

My 72 YO Dad knew who he was, I knew who he was. He didn't play on our team either. fwiw.
