Fundies Who Deny Global Warming
OK how frustrating is this exchange. A Fundie aquaintence who is CONSTANTLY refering to climate issues as "cyclical and no big deal" had this response to an article I sent her after reading it here on DU:

===========================================

***Professor Peter Wadhams, of Cambridge University, who was the first Briton to monitor Arctic sea ice from nuclear submarines, said: "One of the big changes this winter is that a large area of the Barents Sea has remained ice-free for the first time.***

Oh, yeah? So he's been around for a few thousand years observing this? Granted, the ice melt is severe and has been...but we don't know whether or not this has happened before in pre-recorded weather history. That's all I'm saying.

WTF?? She needs a several thousand year old man in order to listen to any of it? What do you say to these people besides, buhbye?

1. Never try to teach a pig to sing.
It wastes your time, and it annoys the pig.

Don't waste your time trying to convince someone who needs an eye witness for climate change. Does she believe dinosaurs existed? Some people just won't believe. Don't frustrate yourself trying.

2. what my mom said to my dad
after he basically told her that Michael Crighton told him global warming wasn't real:

whether or not it's a 'normal' cyclical change doesn't affect the fact that it's going to have bad results for us. natural does not always equal good.

3. My dads mother, may she rest in peace said that ...

"I don't come from no damn monkey," she said this about ten years ago when she saw my biology book. I couldn't believe it was the nineties. Btw aren't we supposed to be stewards of the earth? I remember reading that in the bible somewhere.

Say "no" to it.

That's what I've done with my former fundie friends.

Use your personal boundary.

7. To take the time to teach them all the wealth of methods
we have found to read the climactic records for the last half-million years or so is probably more wearing on you than it's worth. To quote Lazarous Long, "Remember them as they were, then write them off!"

We have learned to read the records available in large parts of the world so well that I can show you the amounts of rainfall, year by year, in Mexico, for the last two thousand years. When people choose to ignore science and education, there is simply no way to disabuse them of their Rush Limbaugh-like ignorance. No point in wasting your time and energy.

8. Unless he or she has a degree in earth science, climatology,
meteorology, what have you, then he or she isn't a reliable source. That, and, I thought fundies welcomed the End of the World?

9. It's not just fundies...
I know enough otherwise rational people who just refuse to believe climate is really changing.

13. She's wrong, anyway.

Pack ice at the poles has layers just like rock or tree rings, you can measure the snowfall and melt and stuff. The record goes back thousands of years.

She needs to read some things.
