~ We need a candidate people want ~
- Tough on crime, but supporting civil rights
- Willing to go to war in a heartbeat, but only as a last resort
- Wanting to give the average joe a tax break, while balancing the budget
- Getting everyone health coverage who needs it, without costs going up
- Wanting to make life safer and easier for everyone

People want to feel safe.
People want someone that will put a little more money in their pocket so they can start saving again. (This is a big one.)
People want government to save money/cut our debt.
People want to live life how they choose, not how the government chooses.
People want someone that will make their repetative, day-to-day life better.

Those are the core issues that Democrats need to focus on.

Forget the fringe/wedge issues like religion, gays, abortion. Ultimately, most people don't actually care so long as it doesn't affect them. You can't make people care about something that doesn't affect them, no matter how hard you try. Appeal to the issues that DIRECTLY AFFECT PEOPLE and we can win big. Period.

2. I think it's unusual to claim thatpeople don't care about gays or abortion

Not sure that's accurate.

5. Most people who "don't care" also believe both should be legal
I think that's the qualifier that gets left out of statements like that.

I know far too many politically clueless people who say they're sick of the abortion / gay marriage issues wasting their time. "Those things should be legal. They're none of my business! They've got nothing to do with the price of gas!"

3. Both Gore and Kerry filled that platform but corporate media refused to
allow discussion of their positions on the important issues while building Bush into a heroic figure based solely on his lies about every one of those issues.
