Chertoff: Emotional responses to security issues could damage our economy
He also calls our government a "regime". BTW, the crappy economy is OUR FAULT.

US focus on risk ‘poses threat to economy’
By Demetri Sevastopulo in Washington
Published: March 12 2006 22:04 | Last updated: March 12 2006 22:14

Michael Chertoff, the US homeland security secretary, has warned that emotional responses by Congress to security issues, such as the recent flare-up over ports, threaten to damage the nation’s economy.

“We do not want a regime in which we are so focused on risk to the exclusion of all else that we lock everything down and we destroy our country,” Mr Chertoff told the FT. In his first interview since congressional opposition forced Dubai Ports World to divest the five US terminals it obtained through its acquisition of Britain’s P&O, Mr Chertoff said Congress underestimated the progress made by the Bush administration in promoting port security.

1. This coming from a pack of fear-mongering douchebags
The ports deal is the most hilarious example of blowback in modern history. They ramp up the fear for five years, then shrug their shoulders when the fear prevents a business transaction? Fucking HI-larious.

3. Uh - this was a White House who attacked longtime ally FRANCE for 3yrs.
And encouraged most of the country to BOYCOTT French goods, leading to retaliation by other European countries who thought Americans were losing their minds.

4. this idiot's function is to deal with issues of security
He has no place talking about our economy. He's out of line and needs to be told to sit down and shut up.

And yeah, I know he's an utter failure with the security stuff too.

5. or, maybe it's time we finally put our own house in order -
it seems we are so busy trying to spread democracy, etc. everywhere globally, and our own house is falling down on our heads.

I for one believe we need to start financing our own national security and quit relying on other governments to bail us our of our financial problems. Take responsibility for ourselves...
