Former Nixon Counsel Dean to testify at censure hearing

RAW STORY
Published: Wednesday March 29, 2006

Former Nixon Counsel John Dean was announced as a witness before Friday's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on a resolution to censure President Bush, according to a press release sent by Senator Russ Feingold (WI-Dem) to RAW STORY.

Along with Dean, former Department of Justice Deputy Attorney General Bruce Fein - under President Reagan - will also be testifying.

Although while White House Counsel, Dean played a major role in the Watergate scandal, he later became a "star witness" for the prosection (Wikipedia).

42. He did not serve time in a prison
He was under protective custody for appox. one year because of his damming testimony. The Judge determine his custody to be time served.

6. ALLELUJAH!! Now can we stop hearing there is no committee action on this?
Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 07:53 PM by blm
It was the MEDIA downplaying the committee's investigation and trying to turn it into a story against Feimngold by ignoring the many Dems supporting this committee investigation.

13. Well then! Bring it On!
Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 08:33 PM by radio4progressives
we had a preview the other day folks, and Schumer introduced a legislation on the floor to punt the entire question to the Supreme Court to decide whether or not the President has acted unconstitutionally.

betcha that's what will happen after they vote this down in committee following testimony. That will keep impeachment from happening too.

Feingold ought to just let the American people know what kind of obfuscations and machinations going on behind the scenes all this time..

someone ought to report it.

9. O MY GOD! I sure hope this one is on cspan!!!!!!
I assume because this was announced by Fiengold that he;s supporting censure. Oh man, I can't wait to see that one! I've listened to John Dean a lot in recent years. He's definately one of the most elloquent and logical speakers I've heard in a very long time!

I want to see Dean answer questions from Spector, who also is a fairly logical person as well. I know Spector is a Pub, and I disagree with him a lot, but I really think he's trying to do what he thinks is right.

As to the other Pubs on the judiciary committee, Dean will easily squash them all!!!!!!

11. Here's a Findlaw column he wrote about NSA spying & why we should worry...
An excerpt...

(snip)

One, in particular, that has been gnawing at me, is the question why anyone should worry about the government listening in on conversations if they are doing nothing wrong. This is an old question that often arises in issues relating to privacy. Yet frankly, it still annoys me every time it is asked.

The Why-Should-I-Worry Question

(snip)

"I am not personally worried about the government listening to any of my conversations, for not only do I not know anyone even remotely connected with terrorism," one questioner said to me after the panel, "But furthermore, I would be happy to give up my privacy," she said, "if it helps to find terrorists." This young lady wanted to know why others were so concerned about the government's using the latest technology to find terrorists.

Let's set aside the issue of whether the President can simply ignore the FISA law validly enacted by Congress - and signed by a prior president. I will return to that in another, later column, for it is an important question that is not going to go away. Here, I will look only at the issue of whether the average American has anything to truly be worried about, as NSA electronically sifts through endless digital exchanges to find the proverbial needle-in-a-haystack.

on presidential power, exec. privilege & limits of pres. authority. Has been ever since Watergate.

44. I've been awed by his intelligence since Watergate.
The first book I read of his was "Blind Faith" & I've been drawn to everything he's written since. I'm struck by his impartiality when it comes to dissecting the law. With a strong, healthy sense of right & wrong, you can take whatever he says about the law to the bank.

25. I've been saying that for months! Well...different words...same thought
My take on it has been that * could stand up, look straight into the camera, and confess that his war was a needless waste of lives and money based on lies -- and the yellow ribbon magnet war fetishists would STILL insist that it was the greatest thing that ever happened to our country. They do not support *'s war in Iraq -- they support WAR. ANY war.

35. Tell the Senate: Censure Bush on Illegal Wiretapping
The facts of the matter really aren't in dispute. The President has admitted to conducting a domestic spying program outside the scope of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), despite the fact that FISA is the exclusive means of such surveillance inside the United States. The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution also clearly prohibits searches without a warrant based upon probable cause.

38. Found the Bible links for the passages on Fine Gold that I think of when
ever the courageous Feingold's name is mentioned.

The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold. Job 31:24

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; Ps 19:10

More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb *. Ps 119:127

Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.
