NEWSWEEK - Baghdad/Istanbul - Blogosphere Nails Kaloogian
Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 09:12 PM by kpete
Baghdad. Istanbul. What’s the Difference?
The blogosphere nails a California Republican for his view of Iraq.

Newsweek
Updated: 7:32 p.m. ET March 29, 2006

March 29, 2006 - Online sleuths can claim another victory. Howard Kaloogian, a Republican candidate in California’s 50th Congressional District, has removed a picture from his campaign Web site that he claimed was evidence that journalists are distorting how bad conditions are in Iraq. The photo purported to show a placid street scene in downtown Baghdad, including a hand-holding couple in Western dress and shoppers out for a stroll on a cobblestone street in an unmarred business district.

As it turns out, the photo is a genuine street scene—from Istanbul, Turkey.
...........
By Wednesday, Kaloogian had replaced the photo from his campaign Web site, which was inaccessible due to heavy traffic Wednesday afternoon. The new photo is an aerial view of Baghdad—or at least, Kaloogian says it is.

15. That guy was so busted!
If one wanted to post a pic of how peaceful Iraq is, you would think they would have double checked to make sure the pic actually was of Iraq. But no, this cat had to lie. Not a good start!

16. Kaloogian---architect to recall Gray Davis.

Kaloogian is no stranger to controversy. He was one of the architects of the successful recall drive against former California governor Gray Davis. But he seemed annoyed at the sudden onslaught of attention. “Journalists weren’t interested in our trip for nine months afterwards, and now they’re trying to find one picayunish mistake ,” he complained to NEWSWEEK. “It’s one itty-bitty picture. The Associated Press gave us a Mark Twain Award for a broadcast we did from Iraq, and nothing was written about that at all.” (Kaloogian is not named on the Web site of the Associated Press Television and Radio Association of California-Nevada as a Mark Twain Award winner, although several radio talk-show hosts who accompanied Kaloogian on the Iraq trip are named. “We invited these talk-show hosts to go with us, it was our trip, but they were on it,” Kaloogian told NEWSWEEK.)

By Wednesday, Kaloogian had replaced the photo from his campaign Web site, which was inaccessible due to heavy traffic Wednesday afternoon. The new photo is an aerial view of Baghdad—or at least, Kaloogian says it is.

23. Apparently there is some dispute regarding his claim to be an "architect"
of the CA recall. Apparently "some people say" he claims "credit" for that and he shouldn't. (I recall that Issa basically bankrolled the recall.) Josh Marshall at TPM previously posted the link to this site: http://www.howardisaliar.com/

Also, Howie "just got back from" a trip taken last summer and puts up an alleged photo of "Baghdad" which turns out to be a suburb of Istanbul to prove how swell things are in Baghdad NOW????

Hey, why not try that with New Orleans? Last July NOLA was doing just great. I guess Howie'd figure that it'd also be ok to show a pic of NOLA from July to show how fantastic things are there now.

So now, we got a fly by shot from the air to show how fantastic things are on the ground in Baghdad? I mean, it's all so safe but also so super duper double secret in some strange way that Howie can't actually show us a real picture of Baghdad on the ground (out of all the "hundreds" of pics they supposedly took). Wow, that's convincing. What next, a satellite view? Maybe the Mars orbiter can help Howie out with more "proof."

I wonder was he ever in Iraq? I hope this gets lots of publicity in his district

Still, you have to admit, he is a trooper. Bush wanted good news from Iraq, and he delivered, so what if it was from Turkey?

Damn liberal blogs ~ spoiling everything, always insisting on the the truth! How dare they!!

The funniest thing was he was on a 'truth' mission!!

Isn't he lying on his blog now about the picture also? He says his people took it, but didn't someone find that the picture belonged to someone on the Internet?

30. Exactly. He's got bupkis...because if he'd gone out on the streets...
...of Baghdad to get a photo of the "wonderful peaceful news of life in Baghdad that the press refuses to report" he'd probably have gotten his lying hypocritical hiney blown clear to Turkey in the cross-fire.

38. Are there any honest GOP candidates?

They revise news stories and put them on their web sites. They steal campaign photos and photoshop them and put them on their sites.

They keep getting caught at it. Rather stupid to keep lying. Now everyone has them under a microscope.
