1. This is very cool
I blogged it the other day.

Help Organize a Peace Envoy = H.O.P.E.

"..You can stand in for a victim of Darfur by simply signing your name and demanding a UN Diplomat of the highest international standing to negotiate a peace settlement in Darfur. We have seen it work in the Balkans with Richard Holbrooke and in Ireland with George Mitchell and President Clinton. It can work again in Darfur.

Watch the video to learn more and then lend your voice to one of the 200,000 whose voice has been snuffed out by this senseless violence."

8. 12,716 caring people are standing in for the victims. Need 200,000!
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 04:22 PM by Sapphire Blue
The international community has not agreed on a number of those killed in the slaughter—estimates range from 180,000 to 400,000. The New York Times reported the number 200,000 in March 2006.

At least two million people have been forced to flee their homes—and are displaced in Sudan or in camps in neighboring Chad.

21. Yeah, it is pretty
pathetic. Thousands of people being murdered in Darfur and only a few DU'rs comment/kick. But if there is some stupid thing O'Reilly says, 100's of DU'rs jump into the mix.

12. Rep. Pelosi's appeal after a recent fact-finding mission to Darfur
Senior US Congresswoman Calls for End to Darfur Genocide
By Catherine Maddux
Washington
17 March 2006

U.S. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who recently returned from a fact-finding mission to Sudan's conflict-ridden Darfur region, has made a strong appeal for an end to what she called the "genocide" in Darfur. Ms. Pelosi called for the appointment of a U.S. envoy for Sudan.

Congresswoman Pelosi recently led a congressional delegation to Darfur. In remarks Friday, she described the devastating conditions for tens-of-thousands of displaced people in the region.

"Refugee children struggling in the oppressive heat, without shade, without adequate clothing, sleeping in huts made from USAID food bags stitched together," she said. "At night, their parents would have to walk for miles to get firewood and water, always under the constant fear of attack. But even this horror, we saw in the bright and playful eyes of the toddlers, we saw hope. That hope diminished in the haunted eyes of the older children."

The fighting in Darfur has been going on for three years, involving rebels, government forces and government-backed militias. The United Nations estimates that 200,000 people have died in the fighting and two million others have been displaced. Congresswoman Pelosi says the international community must do something to end the fighting.

"The humanitarian disaster in Darfur challenges the conscience of the world," she added. "It is the systematic destruction of a people. It is genocide. And, if we allow something like this, then we can just indict all of ourselves for -- well, we lose any moral authority to say 'never again.'"
