How would Nixon react to Bush if he were alive?
Although Nixon's desire to turn the Presidency into a secret institution has been emulated by Bush, he wasn't an abolute right-winger when in office. He did set up price controls, the EPA, and Affirmative Action. One of his appointees, Henry Blackmun, even ruled in favor of Roe vs. Wade. Nixon wasn't always in agreement with Reagan either. He blasted Reagan's "evil empire" comments about the Soviet Union as being too arrogant. Although, OHTO, Nixon was still a partisan Republican to his death. Didn't he still support Bush Sr. in 1992?

2. I think smirk would shake out Nixon's positive characteristics.
He would be somewhat critical, especially if it allowed him to say, "See. I wasn't so bad."

8. Today, Nixon's policies would be viewed as too liberal -by our Dems!
Spent the night partying with an ultra-liberal friend. We talked past presidents, when we got to Trickie Dick, we both realized that he did more for poor people and moderate income kids, parents, etc, that he would be viewed as a socialist in today's reality. Forget China, what he did with SALT was at least as important as was his dealings with Europe on a whole range of issues. Forget EPA, what he did with social security, feeding poor kids in school, and many other domestic programs would make today's Neocons jump off a cliff. unfortunately, his policies today also make our democrats in office return to their jellyfish-spined, hide in the shadows idiots.

Did he do wrong? hell yes. South and central american policies were screwed. His dealings with the Philipines and Indonesia were not good, his problems with Viet Nam will scar our nation for quite a while. Still, he actually went out to talk IN PERSON to protesters. Anyone here think that Shrub would ever "meet the meet"? of unscrubbed opponents? Not in my lifetime.

17. Nixon was well respected, foreign policy wise
by Americans and non-Americans. Arms control treaties with the USSR, detente, opening relations with China, withdrawal from Vietnam.

18. The question was what would Nixon think about Bush,
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 12:19 PM by Neil Lisst
... not "what do you think about Nixon?" I responded to original post. I'm not sure what your post last post is about.

I don't care to debate Nixon v. Bush, but as I said, he was more intelligent, more knowledgeable, and head and shoulders above Bush, even with Watergate.

He was friends with his dad, so there is the possibility of them meeting.

15. Well, I suppose if Nixon was around he'd be a zombie,
so he'd try to eat Shrub's brains. So I guess he'd go hungry and just moan a lot.
