Wonkette: Rumor on the Hill that McKinney will be arrested

And, you know, the easy response here is "this chick's crazy," but seriously, the Capitol Police have a picture of her hanging in their office -- even if, as the Reliable Source notes today, she got a haircut, you'd think "recognize members of Congress" would be pretty damn high up on the list of Cap Police responsibilities, like right below "watch out for bombs" or "ignore Roy Blunt's moonshine still."

Anyway, the cops aren't really saying much, but Hill rumor has it that that the Cap Police are gonna arrest McKinney when the House gets out of session today. Which, you know, would be awesome. Once again: Arrested for bribery? Lame and predictable. For punching a cop in the face?

Bad. ass.

Here's Sullentrop's old hit piece that explains the "picture of her hanging in their office"-

But being the Girl Who Cried Racism means that people will also roll their eyes at the legitimate slights that the first black Congresswoman from Georgia has faced. In August 1993, during her first term in office, a Capitol Hill police officer tried to prevent her from bypassing a metal detector, as members of Congress are allowed to do. For years afterward, The Hill reports, the Capitol Police pinned a picture of McKinney to an office wall, warning officers to learn her face because she refuses to wear her member's pin. (And because officers are innately suspicious of a black woman with braided hair and gold shoes.) Five years later, she blasted White House security after guards thought her 23-year-old white aide was the congresswoman.

1. congresscritters can't be arrested going to or from a session of congress.
although they can be arrested once the get home, or at any other time.

that's in the constitution, the british apparently used to do that sort of thing a lot in colonial america, arresting people to prevent from from voting.

2. America: compare Cheney's case with McKinney's
Compare to this: Very powerful Republican VP, the white man's white guy, shoots a 87-year old man in the face with a shotgun, while apparently intoxicated. Nothing happens. Furthermore, the 87-year old man has to apologize in public to his shooter for the distress caused.

America still putting everyone in their place.

3. And she would be charged with...?
An assault charge requires intent to cause bodily harm. I haven't seen any account of the incident that would support it.

4. Karl Rove probably called and demanded they arrrest her. What a great
distraction it would be ~ and the media would no doubt give it wall to wall coverage, and get all their talking head 'experts' to decide whether or not it was 'racism' which should keep the story going for a while ~ they've itching to find a Democrat to accuse of a crime!!

Meantime, the arrests of three top WH officials have pretty much gone without much notice ~ except for Libby. But there haven't been the major discussion shows about 'how could this have happened' regarding him, or Claude Allen or David Safavian eg.

I hope the Capitol police do not arrest her ~ we have far more important issues to deal with. I'm sure the cop in question will survive whatever happened ~ but we won't, as a country, unless we stay focused on and keep the media focused on the real issues that badly need coverage.

8. The only fact you need to know is her noble statements against Boosh
THat is enough to put her in jail. According to the RW she must be silenced.

13. I think we need to wait for all the facts to come out
Has Cynthia McKinney made a statement yet? If she did go past the check point without showing ID then she has to shoulder some of the blame. I think she is honest enough that if she did that and thought that the guard should know who she is she will admit it. If she did hit the guard with her cell phone instead of explaining the situation then she will have to shoulder some blame for that too. But I would like to know what she has to say.

After Katrina, if they arrest Cynthia McKinney, all hell's going to break loose.

Maybe that's what they want.

First of all, Cynthia McKinney is not going to go bashing a Cap Hill cop for no reason. Most likely, he grabbed her. She has a DUTY to protect herself from assault. She is a CONGRESSWOMAN, for godssakes. Second, she presented ID. Third, she is THE most visible and identifiable member of Congress. Fourth, as a BLACK WOMAN and a member of Congress, she has every right to resist a white cop TOUCHING her, or IMPEDING her in any way, once she has told him who she is (he SHOULD HAVE recognized her--she's been in Congress for many years) and shown him ID.

McKinney is one of the most outspoken members of Congress--on the bogus 9/11 'report,' on the Iraq war, on election fraud and on Katrina. She is a thorn in the side of this fascist junta. She is one of the most eloquent representatives of the majority in this country. She is a TARGET. You'd think we'd learn to recognize these bullshit "marginalization" scenarios when we see them time and again.
