I Aim to Misbehave
The America I grew up believing in is supposed to include everyone. Yes, I realize that the America I grew up believing in never really existed, that it was an ideal that we never quite managed to achieve. But in many ways the America That Never Was became a shining beacon of hope for the whole world. Behind the commercialism of Coca-Cola, Levi's jeans, and so many other American products that people across the world clamored for and fought to get, lies a belief in the dream that America used to represent.

America was the world's big sister, represented in iconic fashion by the lonely statue standing in New York Harbor, arm upraised. The big sister that didn't spy on its neighbors, but held the torch that lit the way to freedom and equality for all of mankind.

We've lost sight of that thanks to this administration and its flunkies. We turned a cynical eye on the rest of the world, the world that grew up looking at America and saying "we want to be like THEM when we grow up," and collectively spat in the faces of those who said out loud "that's not what America is supposed to be about."

On 9/11 we were struck a devastating blow and, as we reeled in shock, the rest of the world stood up and said "hey, you can't do that to our America!" People all over the world, even in those countries labeled by this administration as part of the "Axis of Evil," marched in protest at what was done to us.

When we went into Afghanistan after Osama Bin Laden, the will of the world went with us. "Catch that murdering bastard," they said. "Put him on trial and let us all show evil what we think of those who would do such a thing to our big sister."

They were our allies, our friends, and our little brothers and sisters.

But when we turned our attention from Bin Laden and went after Saddam and Iraq, the rest of the world paused a moment and looked at us, wondering what we were thinking. They knew that Saddam, though hateful himself, had not attacked us, was not the person who they wanted caught and punished.

In our arrogance, we turned our fury on our allies and friends, and said "if you're not with us, you're against us."

Though that was never true.

We slapped them down and turned our ponderous might against a tiny nation that never had the power to resist us.

Now the same meme echoes within the United States, pressed with ever increasing volume and force upon those who would question this administration and its policies. We are told that we are traitors, and that only by supporting everything that they're doing can we hope to win the "War on Terror."

I disagree. You cannot fight against an idea, against a concept, with the power of military might. You can only fight an idea with another idea. The idea of the America That Never Was, the idea that was abandoned by this administration, is the best weapon we could have leveled against the threat we faced. That America believes in Truth, and Justice, and Hope for the world.

I stand by this assertion, and if people think it's wrong, if they think that by somehow not supporting this administration's wrong-headed policies of death, destruction, secrecy, and cynicism means that I do not support the soldiers that have been callously thrown in harm's way, I cannot change their minds.

But if you ask me to support this fiasco, this abandoning of America's ideals in the name of fear, hatred, and rage, I can only say with a resounding voice "NO!"

I will not turn against the America I believe in. I will not accept an America in which only the powerful have a voice, and in an America that thinks that might makes right. I will not abandon America in its hour of need just because they think I must.

If they think that being a good American means going meekly along with the plan, I have news for them.

I aim to misbehave.

1. Didn't you aim to do this awhile ago?
I know you did, because I remember it, shared it, and can't do it again!

2. LOL...
Yep. And still misbehaving.

I wanted to share it with people who weren't around the last time I posted it. We've got so many newcomers I want them to see something inspirational rather than the feuding going on right now.

4. Gotta motivate the folks...
Too much fighting going on right now. Makes me heartsick to see it.

We're all on the same page, I think. We're just on different paragraphs. :)

6. agree with you completely--there is an old saying from the women's
movement in the early 70's that "women should raise more hell and fewer dahlias"-- well, I don't have a lot of dahlias, but . . . . . .

7. It still sickens me about the shock and awe campaign
about a country who was never a threat to us. I can not forget the 13 year old boy who had his arms blown off in the campaign.

Why would W condone this?

21. The streets of DC should be filled with angry Americans
that this atrocity was committed in our name, based on lies.

8. Brave words , but most people talk the talk, not the walk, IMO.
See how the sheep scramble to pay their taxes on 4/15 and then tell me Americans are still brave and free.

You aim to misbehave?

I highly doubt it!

There are a lot of ways to misbehave.

11. Taxes that go to support this * regime need to not be paid. Thats what I..
call "misbehaving"!

Spouting off lines from "Serenity" isnt' going to cut the mustard
with the general populace who are quite content to be sheep.

13. Don't pay 'em then...
If you think you can dodge the tax collector when your taxes are withheld from your paycheck in the first place, be my guest.

Those taxes also go to pay the services your neighbors depend on. So it's not that easy. Nice to think so though.

14. Speaking out and speaking the truth...
Something I do on a regular basis. I say what I think about all of this, and don't shrink from the task. I'm getting a wider audience by the day, and I use it pretty damn effectively. I educate those who will listen, and otherwise be as much as a non-conformist as I've ever been.

16. Lots of ways indeed
The Serenity quote is perfect (no matter what some pissy people say) - better stand up for yourself when faced with an out of control government hell bent on making everyone bow to their will!

27. I am right there w/ you! Make noise and make people uncomfortable.
Sorry, my country's at stake. If people don't like what I say and then they don't have to talk to me. I'm ok with that. (I'm telling you ladies this menopause thing isn't is bad as they make it out to be. I care give a rat's ass what anyone thinks of me and I say it's about time! Don't give me a pill, I kinda like here!)

The night after the election I went into a bar with my husband. It was crowded so we sat at the bar. I hadn't eaten the whole day. I ate the day my died dad, ok. I remember being hungry at hospice. I couldn't eat the day after the election and of course I had a couple of drinks before I ordered dinner. The guy next to me had voted for Bush. It was obvious. He was decent but clueless. The ones we need to reach. We talked for a while and he was trying to reassure me that it would be alright. I think he was moved by how upset I really was. We talked about our kids, the environment, homophobia, education. We had similar ideas. He just didn't want to pay more taxes and many people think that dems will raise their taxes. I turned to him finally and said, "I'm a liberal, are you afraid of me? Huh, huh, are ya, are ya, are ya? Boo! BE afraid, be very afraid." I said it a couple of time. The guy just looked at my husband and kind of smiled, like you poor guy. My husband was just as despondent as I was, so we just left. But, yeah, I get in people's faces. I am an east coast girl living in the mid west and sometimes I really think God put me here to wake a few people up!

By the way that guy said something to me that night that I hope we both still think about. I still see him from time to time and he just looks at me and smiles and I say hi kind of sheepishly. I want to say BOO! to him so bad you can't imagine, but I behave. I got my point across, why let him think I really am crazy?

Anyway,
he was from Ohio originally and that night, the night after the election he said to me he couldn't believe that Ohio went for Bush. He just couldn't believe it. Everyone he had talked to was hurting money wise and was going for Kerry. I dismissed it that night, but I have thought about it very often since then.

Let's hope he has, too.
