5. General Zinni is neither a Democrat nor Republican ...
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 09:06 AM by ShortnFiery
But one of the most respected leaders that the United States Marine Corps has ever been blessed with.

You see, unlike the Rummy Butt-Boy Generals in place now, General Zinni actually cared first for the welfare of HIS TROOPS. He wants the troops to have the leadership and equipment they need to get the job done. He was not worried about his next promotion ... he just eloquently spoke the truth from a military planning perspective. Thats why many AD leaders like him were pushed out ... toward retirement when the Neo-Cons began to rule the Pentagon.

The true integrity and character of those like General Zinni is not found in the General Officer Active Duty Corps today ... how could they in the Pentagon's Rummy's Cabal of "Yes Men?"

68. Yes, mea culpa, I stand corrected, he stated that he's a
Moderate Republican. I was in error, in that, I had not heard him talk of his party affiliation in the past.

I admit that I was wrong in such an assumption(I must be moderate too?).

Thanks for bringing that out albeit, Zinni, like most of us also judges "the individual" before casting his vote.

11. He was spot on
Great appearance by Zinni. He was there to talk about his new book, and sorry I missed the title! Pointed questions like should anyone resign? Yes. Sec Rumsfeld. How about others? Anyone involved in the planning of the war who knowingly passed on things they shouldn't have or said things not true, should be held accountable. Plus, he pointed out there were several mechanisims to report the truth, such as Congressional hearings. He pointedly commented on Shinseki and what happened to him for telling the truth.

Kept coming back to the military--saying repeatedly that our military has performed magnificently, and it's only because of them we might come out of this. Puts blame on civilian planners. This was an excellent interview and bet the book is good too.

Zinni and Wes Clark are in complete agreement on whether there was a need for war, the planning, excution and aftermath.

14. I think the title is "The Battle for Peace."
Zinni was concise and clear with no spin. He stated things that I sensed concerning Iraq early on. One of the reasons I did not support Bush at all in the 2000 election was because I could tell he was going to go to war with Iraq. I was hoping that, above all things, Bush would lose because I remember the anguish our country went through over another unwise war in the 6o's and early 70's. I'm just hoping that, in our next election, we will choose a person who can lead us out of our anguish.

15. The Battle for Peace : A Frontline Vision of America's Power and Purpose
snip>
From Publishers Weekly
The intellectual complement to Zinni and Clancy's bestselling Battle Ready (2004), a narrative memoir salted with specific policy recommendations, this volume provides the former U.S. Central Command chief's analysis of America's current global position. Zinni begins by asserting that America's status as "the most powerful nation in the history of the planet" has created a de facto empire. The U.S. has no choice: if it fails to take the lead, nothing significant happens. At the same time, Americans must recognize that, in a global age, there can be no zero-sum games: when someone loses, no one wins in any but the shortest term, he argues. The bulk of the book critiques what Zinni describes as the current U.S. emphasis on unilateral action and calls instead for working with others toward the goals of worldwide stability and development. "egotiation, mediation and facilitation" should be our favored approaches, Zinni writes. And the post–Cold War pattern of ad hoc improvisation in foreign affairs should give way to systematic, in-depth planning. While fans of Battle Ready may grow frustrated with the abstractions in this volume, Zinni's pragmatic, low-key approach merits serious consideration. (Apr. 4)

Now is the time for the People to come together, and these Generals have the knowledge to educate the masses. This may have been the biggest mistake of ROVE and RUMMY..cuz these guys are Speaking out NOW. 41. some excerpts
Gen. Tony Zinni (Ret.) discusses BushCo "Throwing away 10 years of planning" for winning the peace in Iraq after Gulf War I. Said Rummy should resign; "ridiculous statements" are coming from admin.; and Zinni looked at the intel in 2002 and determined there was "no solid proof Saddam had WMD...the containment worked remarkably well." He reported this to the Senate Intel Comm. before the war, to no avail. Also discussed "democracy," and said that it's not just voting that is democracy; democracy also involves education. Cited an Iraqi woman who came to a polling place all excited about voting and she asked the voting official who she should vote for. The guy went down a list of over 100 parties and she was confused but stopped him when he read a name that had "Islamist" in it. She said that's who she would vote for.

In 2002, Gen. Zinni said, "These guys don't understand what they're getting into."

His new book is, "The Battle for Peace," and it should get some tongues wagging in Washington and move us closer to impeachment, I hope.

IMPEACH THE CHIMPS!

51. Regarding Iraqi elections:
Zinni talked about a conversation he had with an election observer. People were excited about voting, but they didn't have a clue as to who or what they were voting for. They walk up and ask who to vote for. The official would start reading the list of parties and thye'd stop him about a dozen names down (probably tired and frustrated about the similarity of party names, etc) and pick one.

I wonder if the parties further down on the list did the most poorly in the elections?

I hadn't heard about this before on the news. (No surprise there.)

56. my email to Russert re: McCain & Zinni interviews this a.m.:
Dear Mr. Russert:

Thank you for one of the most important interviews on the War in Iraq ever. Gen. Zinni is a patriot who informed the Senate Intel Comm. and others of the actual pre-war intelligence and steered them in the right direction. He was ignored in 2002 through early 2003 and now our nation is reaping the bitter harvest of an incompetent, dishonest, and corrupt administration that should be impeached---all of them. This was one of the best interviews you’ve ever done.

As for your interview with McCain, you soft-balled him re: his statements on Iraq. When he said we now have to “succeed in Iraq” because we’re there, despite his earlier advice to Bush to increase troop levels, you did not press him on his plans to stay. You did not ask him if he would increase the troop levels now that we’re there, or start a draft if he were to become president. What is McCain’s plan for Iraq? We’re just going to stay there indefinitely with the troops we presently have, whose numbers keep decreasing by being killed and maimed by the Iraqi “insurgents?” Would McCain continue the soldiers’ two, three and four tours of duty? Would McCain keep sending in reserve troops, leaving us with none here at home for any future disaster such as Katrina? We don’t know the answers because you didn’t bother to ask the questions.

You didn’t ask McCain ANYTHING re: the broken army that Sen. Murtha has been telling us about. You did the American people a disservice in not pressing any of these topics.

Sincerely,

Wordpix

Condo Rice
Donald Rumsfeld
Colin Powell
George Tenet

ALL are ON THE RECORD immediately before 9-11 stating that CONTAINMENT was working!!!
And Potato Head repeats the Bush* propaganda that everyone says containment wasn't working.
I have NEVER seen any of these people confronted by OUR Media about their statements before 9-11!

..."seven months before 9/11, George Tenet testified before Congress that Iraq posed no immediate threat to the United States."

"in a Feb. 12, 2001 interview with the Fox News Channel Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said: “Iraq is probably not a nuclear threat at the present time.”

"...intelligence reports released by the CIA and more than 100 interviews top officials in the Bush administration, such as Secretary of State Colin Powell, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, gave to various Senate and Congressional committees and media outlets prior to 9-11 show that the U.S. never believed Saddam Hussein to be an imminent threat other than to his own people."

and this:

" And frankly they (the UN Sanctions) have worked. He (Saddam) has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors." Colin Powell Feb 24, 2001

"But in terms of Saddam Hussein being there, let's remember that his country is divided, in effect. He does not control the northern part of his country. We are able to keep arms from him. His military forces have not been rebuilt." ---Condoleezza Rice on CNN July 29, 2001

2001: WH Admits Iraq Contained; Creates Agency to Circumvent Intel Agencies
In 2001 and before, intelligence agencies noted that Saddam Hussein was effectively contained after the Gulf War. In fact, former weapons inspector David Kay now admits that the previous policy of containment – including the 1998 bombing of Iraq – destroyed any remaining infrastructure of potential WMD programs.

OCTOBER 8, 1997 – IAEA SAYS IRAQ FREE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS:
"As reported in detail in the progress report dated 8 October 1997…and based on all credible information available to date, the IAEA's verification activities in Iraq, have resulted in the evolution of a technically coherent picture of Iraq's clandestine nuclear programme. These verification activities have revealed no indications that Iraq had achieved its programme objective of producing nuclear weapons or that Iraq had produced more than a few grams of weapon-usable nuclear material or had clandestinely acquired such material. Furthermore, there are no indications that there remains in Iraq any physical capability for t he production of weapon-usable nuclear material of any practical significance."

FEBRUARY 23 & 24, 2001 – COLIN POWELL SAYS IRAQ IS CONTAINED:
"I think we ought to declare a success. We have kept him contained, kept him in his box." He added Saddam "is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors" and that "he threatens not the United States."

SEPTEMBER 16, 2001 – CHENEY ACKNOWLEDGES IRAQ IS CONTAINED:
Vice President Dick Cheney said that "Saddam Hussein is bottled up" – a confirmation of the intelligence he had received.

JANUARY, 2002 – TENET DOES NOT MENTION IRAQ IN NUCLEAR THREAT REPORT:
"In CIA Director George Tenet's January 2002 review of global weapons-technology proliferation, he did not even mention a nuclear threat from Iraq, though he did warn of one from North Korea."

He is all intelligence and logic. He is able to see complex issues surrounding this occupation. Oh how I wish Gen (ret.) Zinni were our PRESENT Secretary of Defense. We need more people with his integrity and military background.

I regret that I find no such courage withing the General Officers of the Pentagon at the present time. At the very least they could resign like the FISA judge. That speaks volumes. Instead they kiss Rummy's butt and follow every directive from their clueless civilian leaders. :puke:
