CHICAGO

Federal authorities contend Chicago-based United Airlines committed dozens of violations of workplace safety standards at O'Hare International Airport.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed $215,500 in fines, and United has 15 days to appeal.

OHSA has issued 43 serious violations and four repeat violations. The serious violations concern fall protection, storage of fuel-gas cylinders and other issues. The repeat violations cover machine guarding and electrical issues.

Local OSHA director Diane Turek says the problems shouldn't exist at any work site.

United says it intends to evaluate OSHA's findings and is taking steps to improve safety in employee work areas.
