9. Whether You Say They're Fucked Or Not...

...they're gonna get what they want. There's nothing you can do to stop it.

One thousand people per day move to Florida. You can't get a decent table at a restaurant on a Friday night in Nashville. Austin is going to be completely surrounded by brand new, gorgeous toll roads in the next several years. Dallas is in process of rebuilding most of its stuff that dates from the sixties.

Dallas county is Democratic, but Texas Democratism isn't exactly progressive. The average Texas Democrat and the average northeastern liberal Republican are about the same. Gay rights and abortion rights progressives generally don't exist in Texas. They shoot'em. I'm not kidding about that, either. A newly relocated real estate agent from New England turned up dead a few years back in Tarrant county, and who did it? A couple of rednecks who didn't like mouthy Yankees. Yes, they went to jail...but he's just as dead. That happens all the time there.

Bill Clinton won a significant number of states there, both times. Obama won't. I don't think he can win Ohio and Pennsylania...and he's gonna need'em both. He's not electable.

Actually, to those of who have lived in this benighted region our entire lives, the notion of forcibly seceding the South makes some sense. There are, after all, a log of troglodytes down here.

But there's a lot of great stuff down here, as I shouldn't have to point out. Also, it may interest the Fuck The South folks to know that there are a lot of Americans down here, many of whom actually vote for Democrats. There are even a lot of citizens who are usually too disgusted or hopeless to vote, or who just registered to vote this year, who might vote Democratic in November if they aren't told to fuck off. And don't forget, Fuck-the-Southers, when you jeer at southern states for receiving the most welfare payments and food stamps, that the recipients are poor people (mostly African-American) who are supposedly the reason for, and the beneficiaries of, some of the most dearly held Democratic ideals.

So even though I sometimes have ambivalent feelings about my native region, I also love it and its people enough to want to fix it.

We would be cutting ourselves off from North Carolina Barbecue, specifically minced pork and hot slaw sandwiches and Brunswick Stew with Hush Puppies. There is no way I could let that stand as long as there is breath in my body.
