Mozambican unionist killed in weekend S Africa violence: union
A Mozambican shop steward for South Africa's National Union of Metalworkers was killed near Johannesburg in anti-immigrant violence over the weekend, news agency SAPA reported Monday.
Walter Ntombela, a team leader at a tools manufacturing company, was stabbed to death during the weekend in his shack at the Madelakufa squatter camp near Germiston outside Johannesburg, union spokesman Mziwakhe Hlangani was quoted as saying.
His wife and three children narrowly escaped after their shack was set on fire and they have since taken refuge in a local community hall where they are waiting to return to Mozambique.
"An exceptionally gifted shop steward... has been killed by prowling mobs, the latest victim of ongoing xenophobic violence against foreign nationals," said Hlangani.
At least 56 people have been killed in two weeks of anti-immigrant violence in South Africa which has displaced an estimated 35,000 people and led to a mass exodus of migrants from the country.
