1. As a Springsteen scholar and fanatic, what does this song have

to do with labor? It has been hijacked by so many people, including Reagan and Bush I.

It is a song about the failure to care for veterans. It has nothing to do with unions and cars or being a true patriot or a good repuke.

I'd stick with Working Man Blues.

Or pick a better song, like "Seeds."

2. It doesn't have to do with cars, but it does have to do with labor.

When the guy comes back home from the war, he finds out that there's no job left for him at the local refinery.

And, of course, refineries do depend to some extent on cars for their success, so you could in a way say it has to do with cars and being a true patriot.

As far as being a good repuke, forget it.

Reagan and Bush TRIED to hijack it, but they never succeeded. Springsteen wouldn't let them.
