Court dismisses uniform co. suit against unions (Cintas)

Associated Press, 03.10.09, 12:10 PM EDT

A federal judge has dismissed a racketeering lawsuit that Cincinnati-based uniform supplier Cintas Corp. filed last year against two unions.

In its suit filed in U.S. District Court in New York, Cintas charged that Unite Here and the Teamsters falsely portrayed the company as anti-union and circulated negative information about Cintas.

Judge William Pauley's ruling Monday says Cintas does not have a right to operate free from any criticism, organized or otherwise.

A message seeking comment was left Tuesday at the company's headquarters.

Unite Here General President Bruce Raynor calls the ruling a victory for Cintas workers, working families and free speech.

1. Good news
I'm from the UK and correct me if i'm wrong but there doesn't appear to be as much support/interest in Unions from the American Left as there is here in Britain. Is that a fair assumption? and if so why do you think that is?

I think the freedom to organise is a fundamental freedom and one that can bring more freedom fir people and protect against oppression, something America intrinsically should be about, but there doesn't seem to be that leap between loving democracy and freedom and recognising that in the Union movement. Am i right or am i misrepresenting american opinion?
