Phenix Lumber faces $293,700 in OSHA fines (Agency cites 36 safety, health violations)

A Phenix City sawmill is facing $293,700 in fines for 36 safety and health violations, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Monday.

Phenix Lumber Co. has failed to correct past violations identified during inspections in 2007 of its 4 Cutrate Road sawmill, said OSHA, which falls under the U.S. Department of Labor.

Lamar Stroud, Phenix Lumber office manager, said as of late Monday he had not been notified of the penalties proposed by OSHA. He also isn’t sure if the company will appeal them.

“I don’t know,” he said. “We’ll have to get it and look at it, and we’ll just go from there.”

The sawmill, which has been in business more than 40 years, Stroud said, cuts logs into lumber for shipment to lumber yards and building sites. The company employs 60 to 70 full-time employees, he said.
