Workers Make Massive Concessions to Save San Francisco Chronicle

Workers accepting drastic contract concessions could save the imperiled San Francisco Chronicle. The California Media Workers Guild voted overwhelmingly to accept terms that could result in the slashing of 150 jobs in the newsroom and other departments. The contract essentially voids seniority when it comes to the job cuts and will increase the cost for health benefits. The company had told the union that if the contract was not approved more than 225 jobs would be cut. Negotiations will now begin for production workers represented by the Teamsters. If the newspaper went under San Francisco would have been the first major metropolitan region to not have a daily newspaper.
