The bitter taste of Del Monte’s pineapples

Do you like pineapples? I do. But next time you bite into a Del Monte pineapple you might find it tastes a lot less sweet. For a year now, plantation workers in Costa Rica who grow pineapples for the giant fruit company have been harassed and deprived of their basic human right to join a trade union. Many have been laid off including some who are suspected of pro-union sentiments. Their union is asking for all of us to take a minute and tell Del Monte that it’s time to respect their rights, to negotiate with the union and reinstate the dismissed workers.

1. Another "banana republic" company. They want to control the government and enslave the population.

2. Weird. I would have sworn pineapples were mostly harvested in Hawai'i.
Good article. Thanks.

3. Most of the old pineapple farms in Hawaii are now housing developments
The land was more valuable to developers for housing than as farmground.

I was in Oahu in '93. They said then that the farms we were touring would be gone in ten years. I guess they were right.

4. One of every four workers in Hawaii belongs to a union, pineapple company's went for lower costs

USA coffee has reclaimed former pineapple land with a green philosophy. When I lost my links last week to a crash, I lost the one to the great news story on this company. (IF anyone knows where it is please post it.)

About Us

USA Coffee Company was founded with the goal in mind to both educate and offer the only coffee grown in the USA. It is a fact that only 1% of the worlds coffee comes from Hawaii and those who are not lucky enough to visit that beautiful sate most likely didn't know that some of the best coffee in the world is becoming a major crop on the Hawaiian Islands replacing the pineapple which went south of the border.
Beware of the labeling that says either Kona or Hawaiian Blend. In most cases you will not find more that 15% Hawaiian Coffee. As you know USA Coffee is 100 % Hawaiian.
What impressed me most is that our Kauai Blends from Kauai where the workers are well paid with collective bargaining rights which needless to say in no offered anywhere in the world in the coffee industry..
As you can see the only products in addition to the coffee are all made right here in the USA.
Today more than ever we MUST Buy American . Our children's future depends on it.

Ted Massinello
President
