Economic Report: Utah Is Most Economically Competitive State In U.S

http://www.laborradio.org/node/10733

Economic Report:

When it comes to economic competitiveness Utah ranks number one out of all fifty states. In an index created by the American Legislative Exchange Council Colorado, Arizona, Virginia, and South Dakota all join their fellow Western state in the top five. At the bottom are the northeastern states of New Jersey, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont and New York. Utah closed a $1 billion budget gap without raising taxes.

1. Two words: Low Wages.
Many people there are willing to work hard for very low wages.

5. Aint it the truth
According to Payscale.com, the compensation for my mid-level management position in Salt Lake City, including salary, benefits, bonus, and perks, puts me at the 44th percentile nationwide. That's pathetic.

7. goes hand-in-hand with low cost-of-living
Wages as an absolute number aren't even close to the whole story. I moved from NY to VA, am making significantly less in absolute terms, but after my expenses are paid I have much more left over than I ever did in NY. My lifestyle hasn't changed in an economically significant way, but my situation sure has, and far to the better.

Would you be better off making $50,000 in Salt Lake City, or $100,000 in New York City?

It's not as easy a question to answer as you might think!

4. The most.

The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "The differences here are not so stark," Edelman says.
