EFCA a "no-compromise" issue for business, head of U.S. Chamber says

American companies would stop expanding domestically and would instead look to grow overseas if the Employee Free Choice Act were to be signed into law, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce warned Friday.

Speaking to a crowd of roughly 75 members of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce about what some call the “card check” bill, Tom Donohue said that the federal proposal — which would change union workplace-organizing rules — is a no-compromise piece of legislation. The national chamber will pour money into efforts to defeat any vulnerable senator who backs it, just as unions are likely to do the same for senators who vote against it, he said,

“This is a deal that involves taking names. If you’re going to vote for it, you’re not going to like (our response),” Donohue said. “The battle line is we’re going to play the same game the other guys are going to play. We’re going to play it smarter, and we’re going to put more money into it.”

In response to Donohue's remarks, Bobby Clark, executive director of the political group ProgressNow, issued this statement late Friday:

"The U.S. Chamber is wrong about the Employee Free Choice Act. This is an organization that has has consistently fought every effort to strengthen working families. They fought increases in the minimum wage, they opposed the Family Medical Leave Act, and now they oppose giving workers a voice in the workplace. ... Coloradans believe enough is enough and demand the U.S. Chamber -- for once -- stand up for the American Dream they claim to believe in."

1. Real smart for businesses to threaten to go overseas right now.
Real smart. Obviously, we need to bring back tariffs. No more free access to U.S. markets for cheap labor companies.

3. The unions should go after NAFTA, WTO, IMF, and everything that makes it easy to offshore jobs.
Edited on Sun Mar-22-09 01:02 AM by AdHocSolver
The corporations have been sending jobs overseas for years, whether there were unions or not.

Offshoring jobs profitably and easily has given them their biggest clout against labor. Labor has to make it unprofitable for those corporations, to the point where jobs are returned to the U.S.

Labor has to fight NAFTA, the WTO, the IMF, and all of those cartel agreements, as well as tax laws, that make it easy and profitable to export jobs, instead of goods.

Importing just about everything we purchase creating a huge trade deficit is what is going to bring on a depression and ruin this country.

The corporations are telling you where their power is and how they can defeat you even if you get EFCA legislation passed. Their threat also tells you how to defeat them. Currently, you people are fighting the wrong battle and could end up losing the war.

6. The Chamber of Commerce will do that anyway. At least once this bill passes it will be easier to
fight back at them.
