Today in labor history Mar 28 They carried signs stating, “I am a man.” Dr. King was assassinated

March 28

March 28, 1919 - Six hundred courthouse employees in Minneapolis attended an organizational meeting of the Municipal Employees Union to discuss the benefits of unionization.

March 28, 1968 - The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., led a march by striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee. They carried signs stating, “I am a man.” Violence at the march persuaded King to return to Memphis the following week. On April 4, 1968, after speaking to the strikers, he was assassinated. For more on Dr. King and the Memphis strike, visit the AFSCME website, http://www.afscme.org/about/1029.cfm

I am an AFSCME member. I benefited directly from Dr. King's suggestion to RFK in 1962 to put HOWARD JENKINS, JR on the NLRB board. It was Mr. NLRB that won my illegal firing case on appeal 14 years after Dr. King died.

1. Thank you Dr. King.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
