Professor suspects feds used illegal tactics to indict the Teamsters then-boss in 1963

He doesn't know who killed Jimmy Hoffa or where his body ended up, but a retired law professor will appear in federal court Monday trying to cast light on another mystery surrounding the former Teamsters boss from Detroit.

William Tabac, professor emeritus at Cleveland State University, is trying to unseal secret grand jury records from 1963 that led to Hoffa's indictment and later conviction for jury tampering.

Tabac, who is to make his arguments in U.S. District Court in Nashville, Tenn., said the government under Attorney General Robert Kennedy may have used illegal wiretaps or other improper tactics to indict Hoffa, a longtime Kennedy target.

Hoffa's daughter, Barbara Ann Crancer, who recently retired as a circuit court judge in Missouri, supports Tabac's efforts to unseal the records of the grand jury that helped send her father to prison.

"I believe that the historical record pertaining to the prosecution of my father for obstruction of justice in Tennessee should be as complete as possible," Crancer said in a court filing.
