The National Labor Relations Board says that a trucking company owes restitution to eight Connecticut couriers who were fired in January after they protested working conditions and went on strike.

The board said in an investigation report released Monday that Westport-based Velocity Express engaged in unfair labor practices when it fired the Cheshire-based workers who delivered prescription drugs across the state for Omnicare Inc.

The drivers say they were terminated after protesting problems with paycheck accuracy, but company officials say the drivers were terminated because they skipped work.

The labor board is telling the trucking company it should settle with the drivers, including giving them back pay, or the case will go before an administrative law judge June 23.
