Boston Globe union has 2nd vote on wage cuts

BOSTON -- Reporters and editors at The Boston Globe are set to vote for a second time on whether to accept a new contract that gives the financially struggling newspaper $10 million in concessions.

Monday's vote by the Boston Newspaper Guild is the second time in two months that Guild members will vote, after narrowly rejecting a similar deal in June. The Globe's owner, The New York Times Co. ( NYT - news - people ), then instituted a 23 percent wage cut.

The Times Co. began restructuring contracts earlier this year, saying it needed $20 million in concessions from the unions to avoid closing the newspaper.

The new contract would cut salaries by nearly 6 percent. It also includes unpaid furloughs, a pension freeze, a reduction in health care benefits and the elimination of lifetime job guarantees.
