The Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO,is seeking to hire a policy director.
Policy Director

The Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, representing over 75,000 union members in the seven-county west metro area, is seeking to hire a policy director.

The Policy Director will work under the direction of the President of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation (MRLF). S/he will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and overseeing a new MRLF policy program.

The following are anticipated long-term duties of the Policy Director:
• Identifying and developing strategic mobilizing campaigns around creating good jobs in local areas, passing prevailing wage ordinances, project labor agreements, and labor peace ordinances at the local government level.
• Assisting in the expansion of the MRLF’s presence at the local government level by helping cultivate, develop and strengthen relationships with policymakers, advocates, and others to further MRLF’s policy priorities.
• Creating local legislative advocacy materials including the development of written testimony, legislative proposals, policy statements and communications materials.
• Assisting in coordination of advocacy activities with affiliates and community partners.
• Researching and analyzing public policy and spending activities of local governments.
• Supporting and communicating with organizational leadership and affiliate leadership on local policy matters.

Requirements include:
• 2+ years of demonstrated success in a leadership role with a labor or political organization or government entity.
• Minimum one year of professional experience in advocacy research, policy analysis and/or legislative strategy.
• Knowledge of Labor unions and Labor movement goals and priorities.
• Ability to initiate and lead grassroots campaigns with union members.
• Ability to work with diverse groups in coalition.
• Self-direction and initiative to create and move a regional advocacy program, and manage multiple ongoing projects at once.
• Strong writing skills and communications skills.
• Skills necessary to plan and present trainings for staff and union members.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel.
• Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including weekends and evenings.
• Bachelor’s degree.

Desired experience includes:
• Master’s degree in Public Policy or related area strongly preferred.
• Experience supervising staff.
