Sticks and stones

When I was a little kid, we were always taught that "sticks and stones may break our bones" -- and sticks and stones were exactly the weapons used by thugs who attacked union activists at the Johnson Controls Interiors plant in Puebla, Mexico.

The workers there have asked us to send off urgent messages to the company and government.

Please take a moment to do so now - click here: http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/solidarityforever/show_campaign.cgi?c=764
Meanwhile in Cambodia, dozens of construction workers employed by KC GECIN Enterprise were sacked for attending a union seminar and for trade union activity.

Their union has asked for our help to get them reinstated.

I've just added two items to your "to do" list (I hope) -- and if you're like me, you may struggle with having too much to do and too little time.

You might find it's worth three minutes of your time to listen to this week's "Labour and Technology" podcast where I discuss the relative merits of online and offline to-do lists.

You can download the podcast here: http://cdn4.libsyn.com/ericlee/podcast20100820.mp3?nvb=20100821113523&nva=20100822114523&t=0c9993816b41248fb2932 or through iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/podcast/eric-lees-labour-technology/id375325692

Have a great weekend.

1. Interestingly the wood is life, the stone is death in some language
Edited on Sat Aug-21-10 08:43 AM by RandomThoughts
I have wondered about that comment.

Also their is a passage, we do not worship idols of wood or stone.

It is interesting why that phrase entered the lexicon.

You can see wood as living in many things, the living tree, is one example, the forest is another. Christian teachings speaks of the tree with many branches, Norse of the the Tree as the world. Also one reason 'the craft' of masons involves some supernatural elements, since masonry is about stone work many times.

David defeated Goliath with a stone.

Tombs and grave markers are stone.

Stonehenge was stone monuments in the inner circle, and a ring of wood monuments on the outer circle.

Lots of uses of stone and wood in metaphor.

Edit: stoning people, that is directly connected with concept of death, probably why it was picked as way of execution in old times. Although I think rock songs of love removes the violence.

Note I don't think that bad thing about Masons, You should not Fear The Reaper.
Although I personally don't make deals, and would guess many of them do not either.

And yea, I saw the don't fear the freeper, however the connectivity to reasoning fit well with the thread, an example of group think I would guess.

2. I don't fear these stories either.

I like parts of this concept also, even though I think it gets things backwards, probably because of no fear.
