The Communications Workers of America says Xerox is using a union-busting campaign to thwart efforts by EZPass workers in Staten Island, New York to form a union. The workers voted to join CWA fifteen months ago. The National Labor Relations Board has rejected Xerox’s claims against the vote and has officially certified the results. Barbara Elliot is an EZPass worker active in the effort to join the CWA. She says if workers had a real right to organize under the proposed Employee Free Choice Act, workers like her wouldn’t be denied the right to unionize by employers like Xerox.
: “Our laws don’t protect workers like me. The company controls virtually every aspect of the organizing process. That’s why rule change like the Employee Free Choice Act is so important to me and my co-workers.”
CWA President Larry Cohen, speaking at the One Nation march in Washington, says Xerox is continuing its anti-union campaign of harassment and intimidation of workers at the Staten Island EZPass call center.
: “The behavior of Xerox is typical, not exceptional. In many ways Xerox is at the high end of U.S. employers. But when it comes to workers’ rights, they’ve been right there following the anti-union playbook that says workers like Barbara cannot organize in the United States and when they do they will pay an awful price.”
