A Stop & Shop truck leaves the Distribution Center Monday.
FALL RIVER —
The City Council’s Committee on Economic Development and Tourism agreed Monday to support 1,200 union workers at the Stop & Shop Distribution Center who are concerned about cutbacks in work and job losses.
Of the union work force, a Teamsters Local 25 official said 214 workers are from Fall River, 102 from New Bedford, 98 from Brockton and 48 from Taunton as of August figures.
“What they’re doing is moving middle-class jobs out of state,” charged Robert Fabrizio, Teamsters Local 25 business agent, accompanied by a dozen workers.
The council subcommittee voted unanimously to issue a resolution to the full body for next week to affirm that support and ask Stop & Shop’s president, Mark McGowen, “to sit down and speak with the union and employees who have given of themselves to the company.”
Council Vice President Linda Pereira made that motion with Councilors Raymond Mitchell and Brian Bigelow, the committee chairman, in agreement.
“I know you’ll have our support,” Mitchell said.
