‘Clothes make the employee?’

http://www.mariettatimes.com/news/story/new109_103200781409.asp

By Erin E. O’Neill, eoneill@mariettatimes.com

It’s an ongoing debate — to wear or not to wear. And the question of what is appropriate in the workplace is being posed more and more as the younger generation moves into leadership roles.

Are tattoos taboo? Are piercings a problem? During warmer months, is it appropriate to wear revealing tank tops or shorts to work? And what about the ever-popular yet equally disdained flip flops?

The answer depends on who you ask.

Kari Thompson is with Stonewall Group, a marketing company in Marietta that believes in a relaxed approach.

“Stonewall is unique in many ways from the traditional marketing agency. While we are professional and take our work seriously, we do not have a dress code in place,” she said. “We enjoy a much more relaxed atmosphere then many offices. In fact, part of our philosophy is that we believe in working in an environment that allows us to be creative and think outside of the box…. If that means kicking off our shoes or sporting a Hawaiian shirt … we’re all for it.

“We want our employees, as well as our clients to feel at home when they come to visit,” Thompson said.

1. Relaxed is okay...
But so relaxed that you wear sweats to work isn't.

The truth of the matter is that I've become an old fogey. I don't mind tank tops and shorts in the mail room, but I'd be slightly irritated if my secretary showed up wearing them. I have no probs with jeans and a dress shirt and blazer, but the sweats are too much.

2. "Think outside of the box" should be banned from the English language.

"The younger generation" has always moved into leadership roles, and it has adjusted (even in those nasty 'ol warmer months). I'm a dinosaur on this issue, but if I see a coworker in sweats, flips, Britney-wear, etc. I'm less likely to take them seriously. There's a way to dress creatively and casually (including tats and piercings) without looking like a total slob. I work in a Dilbert/khaki environment and think half the reason I tune into Colbert and Olbermann is to see two attractive men in killer suits, ties, and mmm mmm, cuff links.

3. I agree with you, actually...........
But I have to admit that no matter what they wore, I suspect I'd tune in to listen!

And I listen to Rachel Maddow in spite of the fact that she dresses like a grade-schooler.........

4. I love Rachel and wish she'd fill in during KO's absences.
Or better yet, drop Phucker and give Rachel his slot!

And I definitely have a thing for Richard ("Any Time") Wolffe. Maybe it's the accent. ;-)
