Tom Schloesser said he was stunned to learn about the proposed combination of SABMiller and Molson Coors.
"Right now, I'm just numb about it. I can't tell if that's good or not," Schloesser said Tuesday outside Miller's visitor center and gift shop. He was on his lunch break, a Miller work shirt on his back and a Miller cap on his head.
Schloesser, 59, was a machinist at Pabst Brewing Co. when it closed in 1996, leaving Miller as the last big Milwaukee beer-maker.
He liked the industry so much that he even considered leaving Milwaukee for work. He applied for a job at Colorado-based Coors. Instead, he found another job here, and then, eight years ago, Miller called him.
"I thought this would be my premier job. I turned down Harley to come here," Schloesser said.
News of the Miller-Coors merger and talk around the office left Schloesser with one clear impression.
