Associated Press - October 16, 2007 6:44 PM ET

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) - General Motors says it's permanently laying off about 770 workers this year at its Hamtramck assembly plant because of the cars it makes.

GM says the plant closes from December 14th to January 2nd for the holiday period and will go from two shifts to one when it reopens.

The plant now employs 1,850 hourly workers and makes the Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS sedans.

Lucerne sales fell 15% in the first nine months of this year, while DTS sales were down 14%.
