WASHINGTON — AFL-CIO President John Sweeney is blasting last week’s appointments to the National Labor Relations Board by President George W. Bush , callling them “a blatant attempt to keep a labor board with an unbalanced, anti-worker bias.”
The reappointed chairman, Robert Battista, has been “Bush’s point man for his war on labor,” Sweeney contended, terming the move “a clear effort to stack the deck in favor of big big business over working people.”
Business groups differ, of course. But what’s worth noting is how little public or media attention is paid to such agencies, despite the profound effect they have on the tens of millions of Americans who work for a living. That reflects both the increasing media attention to more entertaining news, as well as the dearth of labor reporters around the country.
Labor’s outrage over these moves, or the corporate world’s defense of them, are likely to reach few people.
