Valentine's Day action focuses on stopping toxic trade with "GIFTS" to 11 US Senators

ST. PAUL - Urging U.S. Senator Norm Coleman to stop approving sweetheart trade deals, the United Steelworkers delivered a giant Valentine to the senator's office Thursday.

Participants urged Coleman to take immediate action to protect Americans from the dangerous threat posed by the millions of lead-laced toys and other unsafe products infiltrating the nation as a result of so-called "free trade."

Hundreds of Steelworkers, family members and community activists gathered at similar demonstrations at the district offices of 11 U.S. senators across the country as part of a Valentine's Day of Action. The St. Paul Steelworkers delivered a three-foot heart-shaped Valentine reading "Senator Coleman: Stop Unfair Trade From Breaking U.S. Hearts."

Tara Widner (above), aka "The Toxic Avenger," demonstrated to stop toxic trade. She joined Minnesota AFL-CIO Organizing Director Candace Lund and others to present a special Valentine to U.S. Senator Norm Coleman.

"Toxic trade is breaking our hearts. Dangerous toys, tires, toothpaste and other products are still being imported into our country," said Tara Widner, who appeared at the demonstration as the "Toxic Avenger."

"These cheap goods from countries like China are threatening the health and safety of our children, poisoning our environment, and jeopardizing American jobs," she said. "We need Sen. Coleman to stop supporting sweetheart trade deals and back legislation that better regulates trade to protect American consumers and sanctions importers."
