Today in Labor History February 29



February 29, 1940 - Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American to win an Academy Award. She was honored for her portrayal of "Mammy," a housemaid and former slave, in the epic movie "Gone with the Wind." As a member of the Screen Actors Guild, McDaniel championed the rights of people of color in the film industry.
