3. I saw that and came to DU to see if people were talking about it
and was kind of disappointed to see they weren't. Yeah, the call girl thing is bad, but what he was going after Bush & Cronies for was far worse and I think it's interesting how many powerful also happen to have skeletons in their closet. It's like they are helped through the corridors of power BECAUSE of their picadillos, and when they do something the bosses don't like they get axed, but mostly they do what the bosses like because they know what will happen if they don't

5. Thanks for posting this.
I noticed Palast's story about this and along the same lines. The timely demise of Spitzer seems to be intertwined with the lending stories which are trying desperately to be scandals except for the fact that Americans not victims to a predatory loan seem to go glassy-eyed when you start talking about the OCC or about rising interest rates or the like. Its important that people get all of the circumstances surrounding his timely exit from politics.

he would have found himself in a plane crash. We'll likely see a couple of key democrates killed by 'accident' this year as the election nears.

12. arrogance
Spitzer was destroyed the same way Gary Hart was destroyed, the same way Bill Clinton was destroyed
the same way Larry Craig was destroyed, though it does seem Republican sexual indiscretion is more
ignored then Democratic indiscretion. But Spitzer was in NYC, Craig was in Idaho, difference in media
market could have something to do with it. Still the common thread is that they were all public figures who
chose to act with disregard to the law. To quote Bob Dylan, "to live outside the law you must be honest"

15. Bingo! This is why BushCo brought down Eliot Spitzer at the time they did
....and they hope that the action will have a chilling effect on any further exposure of the corrupt practices used by the Bush White House throughout the last seven and a half years.

George Bush didn't bring down Eliot Spitzer. And even if they did, good riddance. He was banging prostitutes. Enough said.

22. It is not like the bush administration doesn't have a record of using
the justice department for political gain. This is just another example. What a coincident that he was taken down a few weeks after his editorial explaining the sub-prime loan scandal.

So where exactly are Mark Foley, Larry Craig and David Vitter? Behind bars? Still in congress?

24. Agreed
I'm sure he had enemies, but the dumb ass was breaking the law. I have a hard time understanding how anyone can defend him.

It is the height of arrogance or stupidity to do what he did knowing that he had powerful enemies.

29. one person....ROBERT STONE.....
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 02:10 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2008/03/24/2008-03-24_gop_operative_roger_stone_helped_bring_d.html

When Roger Stone predicted last year that Gov. Eliot Spitzer would soon be toast, it sounded like the rantings of a partisan attack dog.

Turns out, the Republican operative is a dragon-slayer who helped bring down New York State's most powerful man.

"Everything surrounding Eliot Spitzer is bizarre. It gets more bizarre now when Roger Stone is ," said Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf. "It's like this is all from a movie."

Stone, who boasts of being the sleaziest man in American politics, declared on Dec. 6 to conservative radio host Michael Smerconish that the then-powerful Gov. Spitzer "wouldn't serve his full term."

The comments didn't draw much attention at the time since Stone was a well-known enemy of Spitzer who worked for the governor's nemesis, Majority Leader Joe Bruno.

Nobody knew that Stone had already tipped off the feds to Spitzer's high-priced hooker habit in a Nov. 19 letter to the FBI.

It also cattily mentioned the governor's fetish for having sex with socks on.

It's unclear whether the prosecutors knew anything about Spitzer's involvement in the Emperors Club VIP call girl ring when Stone wrote the letter.

Last month, Spitzer was caught on wiretaps arranging to meet hooker Ashley Alexandra (Kristen) Dupré at a Washington hotel. He resigned in disgrace on March 12.
Spitzer allies blasted Stone's involvement as evidence that the investigation was tainted from the start.

"This whole story does not pass the smell test," Harvard Law Prof. Alan Dershowitz told the Daily News. "What others have done to Eliot Spitzer is far more serious than any crime Spitzer committed."

Spitzer's lawyer, Michele Hirshman, refused to comment on Stone's involvement.

A source close to the case questioned Stone's account that he found out about Spitzer's involvement through a friend in the Miami sex business.

Spitzer's sworn enemies in politics or on Wall Street, where he is widely reviled for leading a crusade against corporate corruption, would have had ample motive to dig for dirt on him, the source said.

" has no shortage of history involved in bizarre political situations," said a Democratic consultant.

A GOP consultant who has locked horns with the mercurial Stone warned the whole thing could be one of his famed PR stunts.

"How could you believe anything this guy says or does?" the rival said. "I think the guy's got a screw loose."

Let ye without sin cast first...

Here's a look at Roger Stone's greatest political hits and misses as a GOP operative:

# Ratted out former Gov. Eliot Spitzer's hooker habit and kinky sock fetish to feds.

# Bounced as consultant to Senate GOP Leader Joe Bruno after he was accused of making a threatening call to Spitzer's elderly dad.

# Set up offensively titled group to attack Sen. Hillary Clinton.

# Pulled strings at rent-a-crowd GOP demonstrations that shut down 2000 Florida recount.

# Tossed from Bob Dole's 1994 campaign amid claims he and his wife tried to recruit swingers for sex.

# First political gig was with former President Richard Nixon's notorious Committee to Re-elect the President (CREEP).
