http://uniongal.blogspot.com/2008/03/theyre-called-scabs.html

They are not "replacement" workers and they are not "Temporary" workers. They are scabs and Safeway and Giant advertising in the store AND in the local media for scabs is beyond the pale.

I just wish Fox 5 News could have called a scab a scab.

1. If they strike, I won't shop at Giant or Safeway...
Aren't they owned by European companies? With the euro so much healthier than the dollar, it stand to reason that they could share some of the love.

3. Damn...
We don't shop at Giant much, but I hope it doesn't come to a strike. Living in DC w/out a car, it's the closest place for cat food and kitty litter.* I'll just have to make that extra 2 mile walk, but it's worth it to not cross the picket line.
Thanks for posting this.
And, btw - the local DC Faux News reporting is just really low quality. They did a report on how my band used MySpace to promote ourselves, and it was quite insulting. "Bands used to get by on talent and charisma. Now they've got Myspace."

*Yes, I realize that if I didn't buy one, I wouldn't need the other, but I do love my cats, so I'm stuck.

4. Try calling the UFCW local office

In other strikes they have provided rides for those without transportation.

5. PLEASE BOYCOTT!!!
I am a clerk for Stop & Shop which is another arm of the corporation that owns Giant, we came within a hairs' breadth of a strike earlier this year. The company brought in a professional strikebreaker to negotiate, they wanted to take away some of our health benefits. This corporation is EVIL. I know this better than anyone as an employee of 4+ years. If there is anything you can do, at least boycott, get you're friends to do the same, please, the more they win the bolder they get and the working class under-paid employees like myself will pay the price. This company needs to be MADE to see it can't treat people this way. These people get paid very little and depend on the pittance they receive, and what benefits the company still allows. To hell with Giant, and to hell with Fox for complicity in crushing the working class. (Along with thousands of other misdeeds.)

6. Glad I shop at Harris Teeter
Sometimes they don't have stuff I want, though, and I end up getting it at Safeway or Giant.

Not this time.

7. Thanks
For catching this one and posting. I would suggest a call to the store manager or the local HQ as well to let them know you will not cross a picket line.

When we went out in 2003 for 25 days we had tremendous support here in St. Louis. Folks stopped by with food, sodas, donuts. The fire department up the street brought us a barrel and wood for a fire and honked every time they past us (as did all the Union drivers). The newspaper guy dropped off a paper each morning. The replacement workers the stores ended up hiring were a pretty interesting bunch who were in some cases robbing them blind through "employee theft" (one of the temp security guards they had told us that she knew some of them from their time at the city jail where she had worked). The delivery drivers who had to cross (they were non union) would stop by and let us know the size of the loads going in (which were tiny) so we could keep a handle on how bad business really was going for the store.

Stay strong, stay united and we'll keep an eye on your progress through the UFCW web pages.:toast:

9. Agreed
Ever since I found out about Wal-Mart three years ago I stopped shopping there and at Sam's Club. I also stopped using the Sam's Club credit card that I had and encouraged family members to do the same. To this day, I don't regret that decision. If it comes to a strike, I will not shop at any Safeway here or in the states, the same goes for Giant until this is resolved in favor of the workers.
