13. No, but her constituents have the final say.
In the case of votes in Congress, a tough vote that goes against her voters shows leadership. To support Hillary in the face of a pro-Obama district seems foolish.

Her constituents wouldn't even be voting if it weren't for several courageous people who stood up, in the face of their constituents, and voted their consciouses. Chief among them two Texans Lyndon B Johnson and Senator Yarborough.

And not caring what 90 percent of the people you represent want
is more in line with the Dick Cheney school of assumptive power.

21. then the people who voted for the Patriot Act and the War were right
since that was supported by well over 50% of the population. You can't have it both ways. If Ms. Lee is to be a weather vane for her constituents, then Mr. Shuler should be one for his.

Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 05:32 PM by C_U_L8R
Patriot Act? Lyndon Johnson? That's just irrelevent.
We're talking about Lee supporting Clinton
when 90% of her constituents disagree with her.
You don't need to mix your metaphors. It's a pretty clear topic.
Fine she has all the right in the world to support whomever she wants
and accordingly the people of her district have the right to elect someone
who will represent them better. It's politics baby.

25. No, you're back to confusing legislation and personal choices.
Opposing the shredding of the Constitution simply because the President managed to scare the hell out of the population is true leadership.

Supporting a candidate for President when 90% of the people in your district oppose her could be political suicide.

How fucking disgusting can people get when they're so fucking obsessed with their favorite candidate that they just say FUCK YOU voters your vote doesn't count because it wasn't for my candidate.

Please do our country a favor and go back in time and move to the Soviet Union.

42. When did this Super Delegate thing become such as an
important issue? Everyone should support this or that one before the DNC Convention. The Convention to become a "cheer leader" event only? I've voted many years and somehow this all seems so wrong to me.

Party conventions are where the delegates vote for the VP and President. Not on the media or DU. Dean wants to rap it up by the first of July. Who cares about Dean? We now have rules for the party primaries which he is making up as he goes along? It all sounds pretty back room elite politics to me. Forget the voters and democracy.

But this thread here was more about Shelia Jackson Lee - and the impact of her superdelegate choice.

To some of us in Houston - it matters.

She's been in Congress a very long time. And will likely not remain there because she has ignored her constituency.

It will be a loss to Harris County, I fear. However, she's lost sight of the whole working for the people thing. I'd probably fire her if she was my Congresswoman.

Representatives are going to lose their seat in Congress because they don't support him? When did voters demand that?

How about demanding Congress do something constructive to save our economy and democracy...their rights?

37. As far as effectiveness, she's ranked poor
200 sponsored bills since 1997.

Only 2 passed.

That's not a good ratio.

She's leaning too far to the right for her district. I wouldn't be surprised to see she gets less votes than Obama in the GE.

Unfortunately, the party machine is behind her.

I thought she was good for Houston - but the more I research her, the less I like her being in office.

95% of Congress are to the right. The DLC doesn't approve of anti-war Democrats. They refused to fund or support them in 2006. We lost a lot of seats in Congress we should have won.

I'd rate the Democratic leadership as F- (really Republican moles).

Back when I was an executive board member on the Harris County Labor Council, she came to us to explain her vote in favor of PNTR for China. She said she supported it because it would increase opportunities for evangelization in China.

I hope her constituents ditch the bitch.

48. Lee's voting record on trade deals is not perfect
Edited on Tue Apr-01-08 12:27 AM by mac2
but what about all the rest of the Dems? I don't approve of NAFTA or trade deals behind closed doors. Both Hillary and Obama are globalists but want to make trade more balanced. How about more democratic and not behind closed doors.

All of Congress giving trade control to the Executive Branch broke their oath of office regarding trade. It is not their duty to give away.

http://www.votesmart.org/issue_keyvote_detail.php?cs_id=V2726&can_id=21692 Lees' trade record.

Lee was talking about the African Union one day on CSPAN like it existed. Did the people of Africa vote on it? It took me back a bit since I've always liked Lee. Everyone in Congress ends up being a betrayer...how is that?

I like Ms. Jackson Lee. I wish to hell we had a Democrat in my congressional district. She's in a tough place. I see her point about keeping promises.

Just the same, if her friendship with Hillary Clinton is a true one, the Ms. Clinton should be able to handle it if Ms. Jackson Lee told her, "I'm sorry but I have to follow the will of my constituency."
