The point here isn't to agree with the right-wingers who piled on Hillary for making this comment in 1992.

The point is that with her hypocritical attacks on Barack Obama, she's embraced the worst elements of the right-wing.

2. That was most Americans' first introduction to Hillary Clinton
She got off on the wrong foot with many Americans and I don't think she ever fully recovered.

3. You know, I respect her for her career. But she had a very arrogant attitude there...very elitist.

6. Oh Please! This isn't about women in general, nor about sexism
And your attempts to make it so are pathetic.

This is about one person. Hillary Clinton. And every time someone attempts to categorically dismiss all criticism againt Hillary as sexist, it makes those who know better more firm and resolute in their opposition.

You do not weaken your opponent, you simply add fuel to the fire of their discontent.

7. Such pathetic, endless, rote denial.
Yeah. You'll vote for a woman president. As soon as you find one good enough. Yeah. That's the ticket.

Sexism is alive and well and disgusting at DU.

But you're so PROUD of yourself because you ain't racist!

8. so we SHOULD vote for HRC simply because she's a woman?
voting for anyone on the basis of superficial characteristics such as gender, race, hair color, weight, height, or eye color is just downright stupid.

she SUCKS AS A CANDIDATE. she's a FUCKING LIAR. she's the SAME OLD SHIT.

but be proud of yourself for "voting for a woman"--that's a sign of smug superiority I guess.

5. What ticks me off exactly

I think this is just paraphrasing the OP, but to clarify:

She learned the wrong lesson from the unfair right wing attacks she received in the 90's. Instead of learning that this is no way to do politics, she learned to use these attack tactics herself.

13. Yes, unfortunately, that's the same impression I have.
And I think in truth that's what she considers the foundation of her experience. (my opinion only)

9. I may be wrong but...
Why would any true democrat vote for HRC unless it has to do with sex or race? HRC is so full of lies and has shown very clearly that she can not be trusted...Why do some still try and defend her, or still back her? As for the Republican attack machine I hate to say this but some of their so-called attacks on Billary back in the 90's appear to have been truthful. Most have never seen Billary when they are losing, especially losing an election they think is their RIGHT to have.

Another thing, I watched the "Compassion Forum" last night and I found it very uncomfortable to watch...Am I alone in this feeling?

10. I turned to it a bit where HRC was on. I do find it
concerning, as there seems to be such a focus on religion and the candidates. Religion or faith has no place in government. There is a reason for that. Our framers had seen what the intertwining of religion with government could do. That is why I laugh when they talk about how free we are in this country. I feel like I am 'free' to believe what they want me to believe. I do not have a problem with a candidate who believes in that stuff. Just keep it to yourself. Because I was under the impression that the government was supposed to represent the people. Wouldn't that mean ALL the people? Even folks like me who do not do religion. This has always been my biggest problem with the religious baloney in elections....

it was funny HRC trying to explain why the last time she went to church was easter.

11. W I would love to see one day...I have a dream...
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 07:31 AM by Viracocha711
...To see a candidate say when asked about his/her religious beliefs and how they will influence their decision making..."My religious or non religious beliefs are private and have no place in public life or more important they have no place in our system of government. I will base my decisions in office on my education, because my education was based on science" AND AFTER MAKING A STATEMENT LIKE THIS THEY ACTUALLY GET ELECTED! NOW THAT DAY WOULD MEAN THIS COUNTRY WAS ACTUALLY FREE, FREE FROM THE RELIGION THAT DIVIDES US!

What really sucks is I know there are candidates out there that do not believe in such things as gods who control us...But they stand no chance at getting elected if they were actually to say this. My guess is Barack Obama is one of these people. Because if you really believe the religion of Moses, Jesus, and Mohamed you would govern as the religion says to govern or you would swim in the eternal lake of fire. Or to be blunt, you would govern like a republican...Like "W" has done, and we see where governing by the book has got us!

"Say nothing of my religion. It is known to my god and myself alone."
-- Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to John Adams, 11 January 1817

14. I agree with you.. however
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 09:25 AM by Voice for Peace
(and I'm particularly allergic to religion)... there are many people for whom religion is a big part of their lives. If you haven't watched Obama's speech from a few years ago on politics and religion, do -- it is brilliant.

I thought the 'compassion' forum (agree it was misnamed) was an opportunity for religious people to get to know the candidates, and was good in that sense. I thought both of them did pretty well considering the forum & some of the questions (still haven't seen it all, only parts of it). It's a priority for Obama to find common ground with all Americans -- and he is good at it, because it's real for him. At heart, everybody wants the same basic things, if they're human.

16. Absolutely agree with your point.
I remember at the time thinking, oh hell that was badly worded, but being angry at how the comment was being portrayed. Elitist and ultra-feminist were being thrown around.

But despite that gaffe, despite gennifer flowers, and despite news stories breaking around their heads about about Bill Clinton playing fast and loose with lawmaking in the Governor's mansion (remember the Arkansas ethics & disclosure law), the Clintons sure didn't believe *they* were unelectable...
