This is not new. I saw it happen like on C-SPAN in January. It took me a while to find video of it and have only now been able to capture & edit the video. I've talked about it on DU a couple of times and others have told me this is not the only time he's done this.

McCain arrives at a New Hampshire campaign event, greets some people he barely knows (if he knows them at all), then turns and sticks his hand out for that lady in the red jacket to shake. Only problem is that lady is his wife. Check out the look on her face and his reaction. She tells him to "go down there."

Watch this and then tell me that it's unfair to point out that he's a dottering fool.

I welcome suggestions for a snarky audio overdub - or feel free to do it yourself.

I also invite you to comment & rate on YouTube as I imagine I will get some Freeper comments.

4. Is this a sign of what his marriage is like? Or is it senility?
They may not have much of a marriage. After all, he lives in D.C. most of the year and she probably remains behind in Arizona. They're probably spending more time together now during the campaign than they have since the beginning of their marriage.

11. Maybe not senility but
just being tired from the constant campaigning.

15. That's my take too.
At first I expected it might have been something he was doing just joking or being playful. But clearly he was disoriented.

We all get disoriented once in awhile. It happens a whole lot more when you are as old as he is. We can only prey that if he were President, he would sleep through that 3AM phone call because I sure wouldn't want this guy making any important decisions when he isn't fully alert.

her reaction was funny too. but i don't think it proves anything about him. i hope people don't make a big deal about this, because its not a big deal, and anyone that tries to use it against him (ie "hes senile!" "hes an idiot!" "hes losing it!" etc) would only make themselves look stupid.

25. I think it's just a funny moment captured on Video. I also think it can happen to anyone
SOI don't think this is evidence that he is losing it. What I find distrubing is how his wife had the "don't touch me you leper" reaction. I mean when husband and I have done that we lauch and hug each other, or continue the hand shake to be funny, she was like ewwwww old man germs

31. no
i think it was more of a "oh shit" reaction because he screwed up, and it looks bad. it was more like "eek! what are you doing?! don't shake my hand you dumbass!" but yeah, she should have continued to shake his hand and laughed about it.

12. So what?
I've had more than one incident saying my goodbyes at a party where I made to shake my brother's hand. I've seen plenty of sound-minded people do the same thing. This is trivial.

If we want to make McCain look foolish, we can use his various self-contradictions and crazy policies. This handshake thing isn't going to persuade anyone who is not already against him.

This incident reminds me of Obama's 57 states comment. Campaign fatigue for both men.

I would not say to anyone "Don't vote for McCain because he shook his own wife's hand."

Except maybe with tongue in cheek.

19. This tells me that he forgot his wife was behind him in the receiving line
Clearly if he had a sense of who came in the door with him, and if he remembered that the plan was that they would both proceed together down the receiving line, then when he turned around at the end he would/should have expected to see his wife. Though I can't fault him personally for trying to shake his wife's hand, it is another tiny example of why this particular 70-year old man should not be our next President.

24. see this is the rub
the older folks in our party are feeling some type of way when discussing age issues. i have a 75 yr old mom, a 70 yr old dad and a 80 yr old step father that have it all together. there are folks in their 50's and 60's in way worse shape than they are. mccain is losing it and it is getting more and more obvious. i say we get him on it, he probably won't even remember we did. to the elder statesfolks of our party-this is in no way directed at you. you hold the wisdom of our party and are truly respected in my book as are the elders in my family. but, for whatever reason mccain ain't holding it together and the repubs think they can ron reagan him and we can't allow that. we have to get him at his weak spots and one of them is his mental capacity-which is receding.
