Obama Responds To McCain: "Strong" Presidents Aren't Afraid To Meet With Enemies
By Greg Sargent - May 19, 2008, 1:47PM

Barack Obama, in Montana, responded moments ago to McCain's ridicule of the Illinois Senator for saying that Iran is a minuscule threat compared to the former Soviet Union.

McCain said this revealed Obama's "inexperience and reckless judgment." Here's the key part of Obama's reply...

"Here's the truth: the Soviet Union had thousands of nuclear weapons, and Iran doesn't have a single one. But when the world was on the brink of nuclear holocaust, Kennedy talked to Khrushchev and he got those missiles out of Cuba. Why shouldn't we have the same courage and the confidence to talk to our enemies? That's what strong countries do, that's what strong presidents do, that's what I'll do when I'm president of the United States of America."

Obama also said: "What are George Bush and John McCain afraid of"?

This sort of thing will thrill Democrats who want to see how a Democratic presidential candidate will fare if he adopts something other than the oft-employed "hawkish" rhetoric that's supposedly necessary for Dems to win an argument with Republicans about national security.

Judging by these early skirmishes between McCain and Obama -- who appears to be trying to do nothing less than redefine what it means to be "strong" and "tough" on foreign policy -- we may soon find out.

2. Clearly.

This side-by-side proves the point - McSame is now tethered at the hip to Chimpy's failed foreign policy record. I've edited the subject line to reflect the "ownership." :)

Not only that, McSame comes across on the stump as an angry old fear-mongering codger. "Hey Ahmadinejad! Get off my lawn! Bah!"

3. Hillary supporters: have you ever seen your candidate deliver this kind of response?
Tough, confident, going right to the heart of the matter and not flinching from making statements that the Repugs will attempt to denounce. When has Hillary ever done something like that?

4.  When I saw Barack say that on MSNBC this morning, I let out a whoop and did a little dance!
He is taking control of this argument. No doubt about it!

6. DAMN!!!
McSame screwed up big time on this one. I dont see how he can even defend himself on this issue. He should have kept his mouth shut when Bush made that dumb comment.

What person in their right mind doesnt think we should talk to other countries?

This is a losing cause for McSame

8. Is this how the campaign is going to go
Obama: We have hope.

McCain: Damn hope.

McCain has become the grumpy old man that noone wants to hang around with.

9. McCain almost seemed like he had a little cotton mouth...
couldn't quite get those words out of his mouth or finish his thoughts. I hate to throw age in as a factor but I want a president who can speak for himself and think through a thought with out having to think about what he was supposed to say about an issue!

11. I'm glad Obama is fighting back, but let's be honest for a moment....
McInsane is so out of it and such an easy target that anyone with the IQ of a lima bean could kick his ass. I didn't think it possibly for the pukes to have a stupider candidate than *, but by god they've found one.

13. I think you are very right. The more I hear McCain...
the more I almost feel sorry for the repugs. Their candidate radiates wordy uncertainty, and the more he talks the less competent he sounds.
