Obama’s the Big Man on Campus
By Sarah Wheaton
The “rock star” metaphor for Senator Barack Obama has already become a cliché of campaign coverage. But there’s really nothing more appropriate to use. Today, after speaking with other presidential nomination-seekers in the morning to the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting in Washington, Mr. Obama addressed a crowd of more than 3,000, mostly sign-waving, students.

The event was sponsored by Students for Obama at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., and the junior senator from Illinois is clearly a favorite with young people. One group on Facebook, a social networking website especially popular with college students and recent graduates, called “One Million Strong for Barack” already had 100,000 members as of Thursday (it was started only a few weeks ago), and its creator expects to reach the million mark in April.
“I love a man with a sense of humor,” said Noor Alami, a sophomore sporting an “Arab American Democrat” button. An “avid reader of Time,” Ms. Alami was riveted by the article about Mr. Obama in a recent issue. “He just connects with other people more,” she said, especially in comparison to candidates like Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
“He’s outside the establishment … a fresh face,” said Corey Beasley, a member of the College Democrats at George Mason. He said that within the club, Mr. Obama elicits the “most enthusiasm,” though students are still open to other candidates.
