1. just a quote

2. sorry sleebarker
It's just a little humorous and I am not making fun of the entire region, I love the south and will be driving through it next month. But you have to admit there are some areas of the planet that have more than their share of scary people.

Those are much more dangerous than ANYONE in the south. And sometimes, seemingly more stupid.

45. Any single R in DC
is definitely more dangerous than any single R in the South, but it's the large number of R's in the South that put them there. (For the record, I'm in Texas.)

I'm currently reading this:
http://www.amazon.com/Foxes-Henhouse-Republicans-Heartland-Democrats/dp/0743286529/sr=8-1/qid=1171413457/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-9255132-5708657?ie=UTF8&s=books
which has some theories about how the R's took over the South. (Basically by divisiveness, scapegoating, and pandering to prejudice, to cut to the chase.... ;) )

12. actually, if that woman did call "her boys" to go beat someone up
it's on camera and it's a serious crime. I wonder where that station is exactly . . . anyone know?

Damn I wish I'da been there. Break one hick in half, rip his quivering liver out through his rectum, and the rest will shit themselves and run away. These people really really REALLY hate gays, like, to death.

Those slack jawed hammer toe no neck drop chinned loose nostril nuclear lipped inbred yokels need to run into someone meaner than them; it would be good for their collective mental illness.

6. I have lived my old life in Alabama and I thought that this little video
capture perfectly the general population of Alabamians that I have known. If you do not think that those yahoos at that filling station were representative of typical, rural Alabamians, then you don't know this area very well...

10. They would have received the same reaction in any number of
southern states. It may be hard for people who are unfamiliar with the south to believe it, but I'm from the south and I could see this very same thing happening in small towns around here.

8. In many ways, no doubt. But there is one thing about the
deep south that may be even more different than other parts of the country - and that is its extremes. In the South if you are a leftist, you tend to be way left; and conversely, if right, way right (and there are more of them). Southern Baptist or atheist, KKKer or Commie...

Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 02:34 PM by Gelliebeans
about 15 years ago from California the second morning after arriving we came out to our new driveway and found our California license plates (both cars) bent all of shape. How was that for a welcome? Eeeek.

We moved back home 9 months later. I was never so happy to see California again in all my life.

11. This is a true story. Back in 1965 a friend and I were travelling
through Alabama on our way from Texas to Georgia. We stopped at a restaurant to get something to eat and noticed a group of men looking at us strangely, so we asked the waitress what was going on. She said that they were checking us out because of our Texas license plates. This was right after the violence in Selma, and during the civil rights freedom riders. The men were mad at Lyndon Johnson for the civil rights laws being passed at that time, so naturally they thought were were personal friends of Lyndon since were were from Texas. We drove on and arrived at our destination OK, but thinking back on it years later, we could have been lynched or shot right then and there on that trip. I don't think we realized at the time what danger were were really in. Now, Texas is as bad as Alabama ever was, that's for sure, Bush has done that for us.

14. Did anybody notice that they only got their courage when the self-described
hicks numbered more than the soon-to-be victims? "I'm gonna git my boys!" - all she had to do was point out that they were not welcome and that she would refuse to sell them "petrol" (if she understood that word ...)

And I bet that they probably bragged about how some wimpy (yeah, right - I saw that woman - she could give Stone Cold Steve Austin a run for his money) woman chased away all them "northern faggot libruls" away with just a glance ...

Yup ... southern hospitality ... and they bitch because someone comments on the "Confederate flag" on their wooden bumper ...

Funny yeah, but in a way also scary that one still could get close to facing a lynching in some parts of the "land of the free" by good Christians for having done nothing more than messages on a car like Hillary for Pres, Nascar sucks or begin gay. And this is fueled by the hateful and divisive politics of the Repugs who don't care about what the victims have to go through.

But remember, this is RURAL Alabama. You could drive around my neighborhood for a few days and get nothing worse than a one-finger salute (but then I live in one of the more liberal places in AL).

Sadly, the worst reaction would be to the "Hillary For President".

Also, he mentioned running for the border. Do you really think it would be better in rural Geaorgia, or rural Mississippi, Florida (panhandle), or Tennessee?

BTW, Alabama makes Tennessee look open-minded (I've lived in both).

I don't find "let's thumb our noses at the backwards Philistines" topics or jokes funny at all. The people behind the jokes -- and those that laugh at them -- are the same type of self-appointed cultural superiors who walk around wearing carrying-pouches around their waists, who wear spandex bicycle pants, and have a latte shoved up their butts.

Sorry to you Southerners, but I lived down there for 7 years, first Florida and then South Carolina, and I have to admit, I was NEVER happier to get out of anyplace in my life.

"The boys" they spoke of, are everywhere down there. No denying it. It's like another planet. Gives me chills up and down my spine just thinking about it. :scared:

46. To the 'Top Gear' haters on this thread...
... what you don't see in that snippet is what happened later in that same episode when they reached their destination in Louisiana. They showed and commented on the utter destruction wrought by hurricane Katrina in 2005 and just how little had been done by the U.S. government to help the people there. Then they tried to give their vehicles away to people that needed them. It was quite a powerful segment.

The part of the trip shown in that snippet was when they were challenged to cross Alabama without being shot or arrested while having somewhat inflammatory words written on their vehicles. The producers anticipated a reaction. I think they were surprised by how ugly it was.

Did you view "The Amazing Racist"? Were you surprised at how ugly an African-American man reacted when some jerk brought a klan robe in to be dry cleaned? You know, there are certainly lots of black people in the south who are similarly ill educated, but similar derision and taunts would be clearly racist and provoke howls of outrage from those who are now laughing. I asked a simple question. Is this kind of bigotry OK? Is bigotry wrong, or does it depend on other factors?

I'm a southern boy, but I live now in San Francisco. Is the right wing innuendo about "San Francisco values" just as fine as anti-Southern smears? I'm trying to figure out just who it's OK to dehumanize.
