The Doha Debates: Tackling Extremism

Panel Members: Diana Buttu, Desmond Tutu, Hamza Yusuf Hanson, and John Esposito

(( There are several of these debates but only three seem to be online on YouTube. ))

The Doha Debates are a public forum for dialogue and freedom of speech in Qatar.

Each month, invited speakers debate the burning issues of the Arab and Islamic world in front of an audience who are encouraged to participate by asking questions. The Debates are chaired by the internationally renowned broadcaster Tim Sebastian, formerly of the BBC's HARDTalk programme.

The Doha Debates are hosted and funded by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development which is headed by Her Highness, Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al Missned, wife of the Emir of Qatar.

1. Why can't we have shows like this in the US?
Shaykh Hamza Yusuf hit the nail on the head; one of the reasons Islam is so hard for the West to deal with is that there is no central authority any more. And John Esposito and Diana Buttu saying that those in power often dictate not only what their beliefs are but force those not in power to only say what they are not. But Archbishop Tutu was the best-saying that God created us so that we need each other-the importance of interdependence.

I wonder if we could get a group of young people who would be this articulate, though.

A must view for everyone who wishes to better understand the ME. Thanks for posting.

3. Thanks
I've put up a thread on GD about these debates, but so far, no replies. I hope that more people here take the time to watch them.
