In reality, there is no such thing as clean coal. Join Reality. We're going to challenge the clean coal myth and make sure misleading articles, false statements and other hype don't go unanswered.

1. NPR interviewed a "clean coal" apologist this evening -- he admits that "clean coal" doesn't exist
yet, but insists the phrase refers to the process of developing clean coal -- for instance, just a few years ago, "medical technology" didn't include MRI scans, but now it does -- the phrase "clean coal" doesn't mean we have clean coal at present; it just means we're working on having it at some time in the future.

The guy was a windbag with astonishing skill at obfuscation.

11. Nuts at YouTube
Edited on Fri Dec-05-08 03:42 PM by AlbertCat
Boy the nuts at YouTube are out on this one.

When I posted on YouTube what you've said here....

One even says it no different from the developing of wind or solar energy. That this ad is "just propaganda".

How about this one:

ok folks just how and the hell am i to keep in business making oil and gas exploration equipment without using coal burning heat treating methods on my base steel products.? wind? not an option at the given time. solar what a joke. Nuclear already being used for 28% electrical supply. instead of demonizing us give us an alternate high grade source. hell im not opposed to using dead bodies of 3rd world nations if would generate the heat needed to smelt chromium. get real liberals!

Dead bodies from 3rd world nations!

And what does this clean coal ad have to do with his comment in the 1st place? Like Solar and Wind aren't trying to "us give us an alternate high grade source". That's the POINT isn't it? And Clean Coal seems LESS an answer than Solar or Wind.

Besides, I'd be looking for new work if I made oil and gas exploration equipment.

Obviously the big energy PR dept. signed up for YouTube on this one.

5. Genetic engineers are only a few decades away from manufacturing Bigfoot.
He can go into the Crypto-zoo next to the mermaid exhibit.

7. It's a good ad...BUT
the wording at the end goes by too fast for many people to read. One of my neighbors now believes there really is such a thing as clean coal because he only saw the large "REALITY" at the end, not the smaller print telling the truth of what the ad is about. My 88-year old father also didn't catch the gist of the ad and thought it was promoting the myth.

Shorten the ad by a few seconds; enlarge the print and leave it on a bit longer.

9. Thanks for posting that pic...
even if they somehow made a clean coal, you have two choices of how to get it. You can either pay a bunch of guys to work in dangerous conditions to get it, or level mountains and destroy ecosystems. Since leveling is cheaper, we know which way will be chosen.

10. And this is what a strip mine looks like 50 years later.
http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/10802306/sn/1615818667

The two areas surrounded by red lines were stripped bare for coal almost 50 years ago. The companies left them a barren wasteland full of gray shale, black coal residue and pits filled with brackish, green and orange water that would not support life (until thirty years later; today they are popular for fishing).

Today the coal companies have to restore the topsoil and contour of the land. But 50 years ago they just abandoned as described above. What you see here is what happens without any efforts at land reclamation whatsoever except for that one field in the lower region which the EPA reclaimed in the early 80s.

12. True they have to do remedation work after they are done.
Providing they don't just claim bankruptcy and stick the tax payer with the bill.

13. Bankruptcy story on the lower of those two regions.

They did some damage to our property for which we were awarded minor compensation just as the mine played out. They decided to pull out in the middle of the night then tell all their debtors, "see, there isn't anything here of value; so sorry."

My grandfather caught them in the act and put a shotgun blast through the windshield of the first semi trying to pull out. These weren't union laborers working for union wages. They sure as heck weren't being paid enough to face off against some farmer with a shotgun.

So the company ended up having to sell off all their equipment to pay their debts. But they made sure to leave one debt for last: the one they owed my grandfather. By the time it came to paying him off all they had left was 40+ acres of wasteland.

Which is how my family came to own an old strip mine.
