2. K & R! Glad to see this post.
I was hoping that this crisis would get some attention down in the U.S.A. In the recent Federal Election, Harper tried to portray himself as kinder and gentler with those "blue sweater ads". Now we're seeing his true colors. He's living up to his opponents' worst fears about him. Harper is a dictator and bully. He talks about reaching out to the opposition, but his idea of co-operation is for everyone to do things his way, or else.

In defense of the Governor General, she was in a no-win situation. If she had refused to prorogue Parliament, she would have been accused of being an unelected, unaccountable official subverting democracy, or some such thing. Now we have a precedent that a PM can suspend Parliament just to avoid a non-confidence vote, or for any dumb-ass reason at all.

Now Harper has time to launch a propaganda campaign and win the PR war. Well, at least the opposition has shown him that he can't get away with everything.

3. So glad that falling oil prices have spelled the doom of the dirty tar sands oil business.
Maybe TransCanada will go under and Alaska will have to eat the millions they paid them in advance for nothing under Sarah Palin.

I am a expiate American living in Canada. He is doing a media snow job up here with ads and phone calls telling people that the coalition is planning to overthrow the government along with Quebec separatists blah blah more fear more blah. According to the polls (if you believe) them people are actually buying his crap.

9. Very funny
Yeah its a full on propaganda war by the Cons and what da ya know the corporate media is lapping it up. We have a crisis of reich wing radio dominance up here as well. In fact we don't even have anything comparable to NovaM or AirAmerica to even partly balance the right wing voices.

Just to explain a bit to our southern friends, Canada has a parliamentary style of government. In it, from time to time, there can be such a thing as a Minority government, where all other parties reps outnumber the ones that got the most votes. And so in that case the ruling minority only rules until 4 years is up or until it is voted down, when it submits its budget, and does not have the "confidence of the House", wherein an election is called or the minority parties form a coalition. This is all perfectly legal and proper for a parliamentary system. In fact it is very healthy because it means that the government should consult, listen, and compromise with the other parties. Hier Harper has bullied his fascist policies through in spite of this, and finally the last straw was his introduction of a bill to drastically reduce public funding from the next election. As the Cons get most of their money from private multi-nationals, this would hit the smaller and more left-leaning parties the hardest. So the other parties called his bluff, and now he is screaming about an infringement of democracy. Funny because 63% of Canadians voted for the other parties that are moderate to left.

Yes Bushism lives on in the Great White North. Coo Coo Coo Coo Coo Coo Coo
