Steve Earle "Christmas in Washington" Cirkus Stockholm 2008
After last nights cloture cluster &%@k in the Senate, news traveled pretty fast around the Chrysler plant I work at. Last night was to be our last night before the holidays, we'll be laid off on "down weeks" until Jan 12th. Many of us wondered if we'll ever be back..So we traded emails & phone #'s while wishing everyone and their families the best.
After working 9 hour days, 6 days a week w/ these folks they do become extended family. Most of us spend more time w/ each other in the plant than we do our actual families. We've helped each other through some tough times, the loss of loved ones, divorces. We know each others kids names and which teams they play soccer, or football for. We've bought each others kids raffle tickets, girl scout cookies etc. so many times we feel like they're almost ours in a way.
I really don't know any better way to express how I'm feeling today...the loss..the abandonment..
than to ask others to understand what we've lost, not only of a personal nature but as a nation.
This song sums it up pretty good though. Although it was written 12 years ago, it seems to hit the nail on the head today.
